Why do most groups avoid planar games?

They are worth using on the prime! My players really get a kick out of them when they run into a member. I'm good at being a moron, so I roleplay them naturally
But I didn't expect my players to like the first one they met so much. He was just some generic NPC I introcuded to them to fill a gap in the party and they latched on to the guy. I had planned to kill him off once I got a new player in the party, but as soon as he went into negatives (I fudged his HP to get him into negatives), the whole party bent over backwards to stabalize the guy. Then they said, "Whew, I thought he was a gonner". So I realized how much they liked the crazy dude so I kept him around for when they need extra backup. Boy, that had nothing to do with why people don't play planar games....
