What is missing from the lore, those mushrooms that grow into Redcaps, they grow from discarded gnome hats. We've shamed gnomes from wearing their traditional hats, and from all the gnome hats discarded in woods and dales, in small hovels hidden in hummocks, and deep in the underdark grow redcaps.Redcaps already are defined in 5E, but them being gnome raiders isn't a bad way to go.
If that isn't an opportunity to apply the falling damage rules, I don't know what is.Last game I got to throw the gnome across a river, twice, so that he could tie down a rope to help others across. That was a fun use for a gnome.
