Why do people think high-level play is munchkin? I've got a theory

Let me tell you a story about a potential player that got involved in my group recently.

(snip tale of woe)

All this really demonstrates is that you met an obnoxious player. There are obnoxious players everywhere, and I don't think it really has a lot to do with how they started out. I'm sure many of us have been in campaigns that were immature, characterised by excessive loot, insufficient challenge, and/or player conflicts. Some players move on to other styles of play, while others may not. It has to do with how the player gets his kicks; the person you describe would probably have been just as obnoxious regardless of which gaming group he'd started out with.

I'm in the "munchkin means blah" camp. Any one particular person may have a precise meaning in mind when they use the word, but it seems impossible to find a definition that everyone can agree to. Some people take it to mean excessive rules lawyering; others take it to mean power gaming; yet others take it to mean campaigns without any real challenge. The only real thing in common is that it's a derogatory term, used to describe someone whose playing style you don't like.

high-level play?

Why do people talk about people who think high-level play is muchkin? I've got a theory.

They have issues with their fellow gamers who might think they are munchkin and it upsets them.
But wouldn't all of the player's characters be of similar level? Maybe the thread starter could answer.

Did this come out right? my post?
