Pathfinder 1E Why do you discuss Pathfinder on ENWorld instead of Paizo.com?

One of the things that I like about "standard" forums (ie EnWorld, RPGNet, etc.) is that you can see user stats with each post. I understand that Paizo specifically chose not to do this to try and avoid "the intimidation effect", but for me, it adds a sense of community and understanding about the poster.

I have been thinking about what it is that the Paizo message boards would need to make it a place I would post to more often, and I think I figured out some things. If the following things were part of the message boards I would find them a lot easier to use.

  • Show which message threads I have read
  • Show the message threads where I have replied.
  • Make something like a TOC where just the forum and sub-forum names are listed.
  • Make the post/new reply entry a bit more user friendly. I still have problems doing any sort of formatting there.
I am sure I could think of more, but I have just come home from three days performing at a Renaissance Festival, so I am a bit exhausted.

FYI the software developers have been improving things since GenCon and the move of the Paizo offices.
1. In paranphases are the # of new posts since last read in the thread and if you click the # it takes you the the last post you read.
2. You get a big dot on threads you have replied to.

There have been other changes too but these at least address your specific issues.

Seriously? I have not seen it in either browser I use. Neither of those features shows up in Firefox or Chrome. I refuse to use IE to read one message board. Hopefully if it is just a browser issue they will begin to support other browsers soon.

Well, since those features work with Netscape 7.2, I am very surprised that they aren't working with Firefox, et al.

Cheers,
Colin

P.S. I am not a net guru, so I don't know browsers from a hole in the ground...I just know that Netscape 7.2 isn't exactly cutting edge stuff ;)

The dot for threads you have posted in and the paranthesis showing new replies since you last read the thread have been in place for some time. There is a website feedback forum at Paizo and you could ask there about why its not working for you.

I use Firefox at home and work and these features work for me. I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. The dots have been there maybe a year and the "posts since last read" feature has been there a while too (although it is more recent, it definitely predates GenCon).

Just adding my 2 CP on the subject. I am a regular over at Paizo, and they were really the first RPG forum I got involved in when the mags were first cancelled. Being a bit older than most, I had never really twigged to how much TTRPGing was done online these days. So by the time I started posting on sites the 3e/4e unpleasantness was just blowing up. Seeing as I had been an 'inactive' gamer (still buying every 3e book, but not actually playing in a game since 2e) for a while, I got involved in the community there, and that's where I mostly stick.

It's funny how perception colors your outlook though. Reading the complaints about Paizo.com's format I find that I have the exact same complaints about ENWorld. I guess it is what you are used to. I dislike the black background, I find the categories confusing (Although I have been lurking here more often now that Pathfinder has a separate forum :D). I also find most signatures and the clutter of junk very distracting. No slam on ENWorld, just a difference in perception. I'm sure if I hadn't been sucked into EQ and WoW for seven years and I had discovered ENWorld back at the beginning I'd be a staunch supporter.

I post at both places. I find Paizo to be a bit more annoying in the layout of its board. Having to scroll down several pages to get to a forum was a pain and it was extra annoying that closed forums were still being listed for a while.

I have also found far more fanbois over at Paizo but that is to be expected. It is a single product form while ENWorld is a more general forum. People who post at Paizo are more like to be fans of the system. But that being said it is still annoying when you start a thread about suggestions to improve something and the net result is a bunch of flaming about how wonderful/perfect the product is, how nothing could make it better, and how maybe you should just go run homebrews if you cannot fully appreciate how wondergful/perfect the Adventure Path is.

As a side not I also found it damn funny when a poster who is a DM told me I shouldnt be reading or posting in a topic I created becuase said DM wanted to post spoilers and didnt think a player deserved to be in the forum. That though isnt really a problem of the Paizo board beyond how the fanbois over there can feel like they have the authority of their post count to order people around.

Heh, I've been posting there at least a year, and I didn't even know that we had post-counts! Here on ENWorld, it's right there for everyone to see, whether you care about Epeenage or not. On Paizo, you've got to click on someone's profile to see their post count, and I'm never really that interested in reading people's bios...
