Unfortunately, we've also been burned on giving away review copies and either not receiving a review at all or getting a non-review. Although we've been reviewed elsewhere, to date we only have 2 reviews here on EN World and one of them is a "non-review".

Ya, I owe you a review. Sorry about the huge delay but I was really hoping to have a friend run Weekend Warriors before I reviewed it. But that just isn't going to happen, time is a factor. He's ex military and really wanted to give it a go. Probably still will, but I really should just review it without the run through.

OK! OK! OK! I'll write a review this month of an older product, from the the viewpoint of the the "average Joe" running 3.5

:D

Excellent!! I wasn't trying to pick on you, and I hope it didn't seem that way. I just wanted to clear up some of the reasons people didn't review in hops this would happen: we get a few more people doing fan reviews. Thank you!! :D

Naw. I don't feel picked on. Just 3 "we don't mind reviews of old product" posts in a row really made the point.

I'll look at what I have and the existing reviews and do something in a week or so.

If I thought that people would view a rating of 3/5 to mean "average" then I would. As it is most people seem to equate "average" with "below average". There are very few 5/5 products out there, but I see a ton of 5/5 listed.

While there probably is grade inflation, I've never really liked the "average" label for a 3 out of 5.

If by average you mean, are most products this quality, then you'd basically have to grade on a curve. And I don't think that works well for RPG products, or is even possible, unless you own every other product to compare it with.

I think "Mediocre" would have been a better name for a 3. Mediocre has some negative connotations, but it is perhaps more descriptive.

I think average works, or middle ground. Mediocre is how people seem to view a 3 notw a day, as people don't seem top like 3s

I am somewhat stingy with 5's. To have some room to be discerning, I have to use 3's. 3's are not "poor." 2's are poor, and I resist the notion that many people try to create that a 3 is poor.

I have only recently started to buy non-WOTC products. Because of this change in buying habits I have been considering writing reviews. The only thing that is keeping me back is that I haven't read most of them all the way through. I've been too busy on just a few things and haven't taken the whole book into account.

I also have to agree that if I am to judge these books I need a broad bases of RPG books (hence my recent spree of buying books) just to know what deserves a Solid 5 and what is average.

Well, I just submitted a product to the database so I can review it, but before I take a stab at it, what exactly makes a good review? Any sort of advice for a first timer? I know it's fairly subjective, but I need to shape my writing style for something that's pretty new to me.

I've attached a document that should help anyone on their approach to writing reviews. Some of it is skewed towards writing for my site, but it is valauable information nonetheless.
