If I owned Hasbro I would most certainly put D&D up for sale at this point in time as some clown is very likely to pay more than it is worth...

Speaking of clowns...never under estimate a clown :) Especially rich ones.

Very true. In fact, the strategy for one of our businesses is to target its sale to a clown. A rich US clown preferably as US clowns will pay more than other clowns. ;)

Hey, give me your bank account information, I've got a magical cure-all that'll put pep in your step and make you popular with the ladies.
My bank account is in limbo right now. However by virtue of our position as civil servants and members of this panel, we cannot get our bank account money. I have therefore been delegated to look for a person of trust into whose account we could transfer the sum of $21,320,000.00.

Simply send me a check for $10,000 to begin the process of transferring these funds into your bank account. We are looking forward to doing this business with you and solicit your confidentiality in this transation (sic).

Sincerely, Dr. Clement Okon

Not only is DND for sale, its going to be split up and sold in pieces. I've heard that they're selling in the blocks of character level.

First up for public sale is levels 1-5..... and a little bird told me that levels 6-10 was sold to a private concern who holds no interest in publishing it!!!!

Me? I'd like to buy elves....

Several years ago, I did get a not-implausible rumour (i.e. not some FLGS guy) that Hasbro had played with the idea but that the asking price was too high for anyone interested in publishing the RPG. However, this might have been nothing more than a bunch of executives brainstorming about how to make the best use of WotC's properties, and presumably that included a bunch of ideas that were unlikely to ever come to pass.

Now? I consider it unlikely and think that even if it came to pass, nobody would know about it until it happened.

This rumor sounds like the kinda thing you'd hear on the Yahoo! finance message boards.

When I was working for a publically-held company I used to check out our Yahoo! stock message board all the time (hey - I worked for market intelligence so it was "technically" in my job description). About 5% of all the rumors I ever heard over there were real and the rest were stories thrown out by stock traders to drive the stock price up or down.

You also experience a lot of hate over there.

I just checked, Dungeons and Dragons is for sale. You can get DVDs of the 2000 motion picture by that name as well as the 1983 animated series. You can also get a large number of books by that same title at almost any hobby shop or large books store chain. As to your original question of "Why?" I believe that it has something to do with making money.
