Why is it that you need to post to subscribe to a particular thread

Every time I add a thread to subscribe to, it only lets me if I post afterwards

is it due to policy, or a mechanical issue.

Are you using the "Subscribe to this thread" link at the bottom of the page?

I just tested it on this one, and it added it to the list of subscribed threads under my User CP...

well, I stand correct.

The subscribe to thread does work, but only if you accept instant e-mail notification.

If you choose to have no e-mail notification, it will not subscribe it to your list.

I don't seem to have that same problem. I am able to subscribe without email notification... in fact, most of my subscriptions to threads are that way. Do you get different options or a strange error when you get the screen confirming which method you want for your subscription?

It's an option in the "Thread Tools" menu at the top right of the page.
