Why is Meepo the Mighty saving the day so often? (spoilers for Sunless Citadel!)

"Why is Meepo the Mighty saving the day so often?"
I am not sure, but to me Meepo seems to have his own life. Lately i ran Sunless Citadel twice with different groups of people and played Meepo differently, too. With the one group i had him all naive and cowardly, with the other one he was trying to copy the groups Monk (who didn't like him at all ;) ) all the while failing miserably at his displays of Martial Arts.

The really strange thing though:
- Both groups let Meepo diplomate their way to the kobold-leader
...and succeeded (plus had to take him with them :D )
- Both groups triggered a gas-trap and each time Meepo got a 20 for his save.
- Both groups did get into a dire situation when Mama-rat shows up and both times Meepo didn't run (will-save), had a weapon (the players seemed to feel better that way?!) and hit-n-killed something, saving a char from certain death.

Now, is he a survivor-type? Is it the wagging of his tail? Is he a mind-wiped dragon in disguise? Or is it the sheer luck of idiots?
Can anybody tell me?!

Well, to speak in character from my Kobold character Manorborax:

This just proves that humanoid adventures should not underestimate the Kobolds power, and that Kobolds are equal to the greater races [thinks in head: if not superior, since we have obviously Dragon Blood in us]

One reason more to negotiate with us and no longer see them as a weak enemy, but as a resourceful and cunning ally.
Especially before some of us decide that, if humans don`t cooperate with us, Dragons might see more use in an ally like us...

It only gets worse.

Meepo was taken in by our groups paladin, and has become his squire and gone through some alignment shift. He has saved the party wizard from being eaten by wolves. He was not mentally dominated when an animus showed up. He taught the paladin's mount, a dire wolf, to play cards. (The wolf is smarter than Meepo however.) And recently, when left unattended in Sigil, we found that Meepo the Magnificent was performing, wherein he would evade things thrown at him as bets were placed.

Don't let it happen to your game, or your campaign too might become The Savage Sword of Meepo

My current campaign also started with the Sunless Citadel and I must say that Meepo became a part of the group. He latched on to the sorceress and despite everyone's groaning became part of their adventuring company. They are now around 7-8 th level and Meepo is still right there with them saving them danger or putting them into it.

Meepo survived the whole adventure in our campaign while taking out no less than three goblins by himself, and went on to become a barbarian. He's the party's favorite NPC and is unbelievably lucky at saving throws IMC too.

It's downright frightening.
