Why is the Scarred Lands Setting so popular?

SL and FR

The setting is not overwhelming either. The Realms just seem overwhelming in their detail and that can intimidate a DM, especially when a player knows more about the setting (and I don't mean just the novels, we don't read them and I have a player that gets pissed off because I changed some aspects of Scardale Town and other things).
This is definitely a two-edged sort of thing. On the one hand, so much detail means you can open up the FRCS hardcover to pretty much any page, read a paragraph or two, and have a starting idea for a game.

On the other hand, there is a LOT to soak in, and players who want slavish attention to the canon details can be a problem.

I have a big soft spot for the Realms, particularly for the older stuff (the first grey boxed set and the Vaasa and Damara supplement most of all). Something about it always seemed very believable, particularly when played as a lower-magic, pre-Avatar Trilogy world (rather than as written).

The price thing for SL books is a biggie, though. I love being able to pick up a fascinating setting book like Hollowfaust for $20 or less. There's also such a unified, woven-together feeling about the SL stuff I've read so far - it just keeps you wanting to know more. Good stuff.

Glad you think so Hairro. In just a week though you can have another little something related to Hollowfaust, Hornsaw: Forest of Blood. Should be a classic, since it's done by the guy that knows that place inside and out, Joseph "Druid" Carriker. :) Oh and Rhiannon helped too. ;)

Not sure how I missed that one on the list of upcoming releases, but I did. ;) That should be pretty cool.

Think you'll like it. I will admit, Joseph will know more than I do, but if I recall correctly (and he'll probably show up and say "No that's wrong!"), there's a half-hag template along with information about the elves inhabiting the hornsaw, trying to clean it up, plus I believe more info on the factions within the Hornsaw, ranging from the Dar al Annot, (hag society in the hornsaw) to more info on the "Dead Forest" home of Glivid Autel. Oh and of course the gorgons, the Red Witches and few more.

Glivid Autel.

ya most of my necromancers wounld end uo therre I think, I doubt ANY of them would be welcome in hollowfause after the purge. the lure towards the dark side of the necromantic arts is just way too strong

For some that's true San. However for guys like Malhadra Demos and a few others, they will go gently into the "good night." Or at least leave a long legacy of necromantic lore that won't soon be forgotten.

I don't know how much of the book goes into detail on Glivid Autel, but I'm sure it will have some stuff on some of the city and the surrounding area.
