why not europe?

'Coz inventing stuff is half the fun; plus you don't want player knowledge polluting character knowledge too much.

That said, I've been thinking about making a setting very loosely set amongst the Vikings. I'd probably have it focus on colonization in the New World though, and beef up what actually happened on that front so there's a thriving community of half a dozen or so settlements on the east coast of New England and the Maritime provinces.

Or at least does anyone know of a fantasy-India RPG? I know there was at least one treatment in a back issue of Dragon.

TheMahasarpa Campaign perhaps?

Me I want a campaign set during in 18th Century India during the reign of the British Factories (vs the Moghul Empire)

My campaign is (loosely) based on the 4th century C.E. Roman Empire. Even so, I allow for some anachronisms like medieval arms and armor, which really doesn't detract from the setting, IMO (any more than dwarves and elves, that is). One big departure, however, is religion. Reproducing Christianity in a fantasy world populated by dwarves and elves as well as humans didn't make much sense to me, so IMC, there is one good god, and one evil god, and that is it (excepting the non-sentient "force" of nature and perhaps some animism).

castles and alchemists, knights in shining armor and barbarians galore- this whole schmear we play with is basically inspired by medieval europe. so why not use it as a setting?

there are already maps available, gritty is built right in, factions are already decided- it is a prebuilt setting, but i never hear of anyone using it.

has someone released Europe: Gritty D20 and i just missed it?

with unknown lands, available sea travel, built in crusading points and all that is available through legend i think my next campaign will be set in europe. i need a date, and after that it seems that nearly everyhting else falls into place rather easily.

am i just now grasping the obvious that everyone else has had a handle on, or is the greatest overlooked resource ever?

I agree that medieval Europe (with trips to Africa and Asia) makes by far the best D&D setting. There are entire libraries with free books describing the setting. No made-up world can hold a candle to that. It always amuses me when a made-up world has "Viking-like", "Chinese-like", "Arab-like", etc. cultures. Why not just use Vikings, Chinese, and Arabs?

As for a date, I suggest the 12th century (or perhaps the 13th). Clerics and paladins make great Knights Templar, which didn't exist until the early 12th century.

Ahahahahah!

I don't live in the USA, I don't have to respect your stupid trademark laws. TM means nothing in France.

So how is your rerelease of Pale Designs coming along. Seeing as how there is nothing they can do about it legally?

A d20 module called "The Last Days of Constantinople" might have something for you. As I recall, the feel (fluffy bits) were great, but the rules (crunchy bits) were seriously whacked.

A prostitute has a chr of 30 and the assassin's death attack ability, "just 'coz". :(
