Why the heck are bags of holding so heavy?

Sniff. I miss the old bags where my first group had a castle with soldiers and tavern inside. No idea if this used to be by the rules though. But it was fun. Especially when the bag inhabitants revolted because the beer was gone.

Now THAT'S comedy

To the OP: it's a little thing some people like to call (and say it slowly with me) game balance ;)

Makes very little sense to me for an *empty* bag to weigh 60lbs. Game balance could be achieved simply by reducing the weight of it's contents (to 1/10th or 1/100th or what have you).

Really, when you have difficulty lifting an empty bag (Str 10 rogue, already moderately encumbered) it's rediculous.

And if they can magic it to hold so much, why can't they magic it to weigh as much as a normal bag, or sack?

Oh well, looks like a new houserule... Bags of holding weigh 1 + type lbs.

Remember - it s a bag/i] - as in "hold with two hands over you shoulder" bag.

If you want a lightweight carrying thing choose a Handy Haversack - keeps your hands free and only weighs 5 lbs. It can hold up to 120 pounds (80lbs plus 2 side pouches of 20lbs).

BTW: A Bag of Holding might fit inside a Handy Haversack if you rule that it is just a sack of cloth - and does not appear full when items are in it. In that case, you could fold up the bag and put it in your haversack - a neat trick, that one. Only works for up to the Type II bag (70 lbs), but is a way to get 550 pounds to weigh only 5 lbs., with only 50- lbs of "stuff" readily accessible, though.

It's magic. It's already ridiculous.

And if they can magic it to hold so much, why can't they magic it to weigh as much as a normal bag, or sack?

Why can't a Fireball be magicked to do 10d8 damage, or 20d6? Why do Beads of Force do 5d6 dmg? Why does Boccob's Blessed Book have 1000 pages and not 2345? Why does a Bag of Tricks not produce a donkey? Why do people find one arbitrary thing strange and not another?

These, alas, are the questions the great philosophers have always asked.

Oh well, looks like a new houserule... Bags of holding weigh 1 + type lbs.

There you go.

Shilsen, they are going to kick us if we post too often in the Rules section as explanation "It's magic" :D
I know, so I'm working on the principle that as long as I'm funny about it I'm safe. And frankly, when you're pointing out the kind of stuff we normally are when saying, "It's magic," it's hard not to be funny. I mean - look at the original post :D
