Why was paladin turning weakened?

If you notice, they now get Turn Undead at the same time as they get spells.

So they get access to positive energy at the same time they can start casting cure spells, which are positive energy based.

I was quite annoyed at the change from -2 to -3 level. It went against every prior edition of the game.

Since the 3.5 DMG still indicates that Paladins turn at -2 levels, I would guess that someone said "tweak the paladin a bit more" and so someone did - albeit without a thorough playtest/plan.

Useless change if you ask me.

Especially useless for the few poor groups with corebooks only.

It certainly put a crimp on the style of my Paladin undead smacker. He was already kinda hurting in that department, since my dice hate me.
