Why, Why, Why???

There is a compelling reason that the Refocus action was eliminated and it has to do with spells. In the Forgotten Realms (I believe it was Magic of Faerun to be exact) there was a spell that let you refocus your initiative as a 2nd level spell. I think it was called Renewed Focus. I don't remember whether it was automatically quickened, or whether you had to quicken it as normal, but it was sick.

After playing in a high level game with that spell, it was crazy good for our wizard for a time. Stupid reason you say? Yeah, perhaps. There are other 3rd party feats and mechanics that capitialized on the refocus action. Since you can accomplish the same thing by delaying in 3.5, there is no compelling reason to have a seperate action. This saves book space and confusion, and is one less thing for new players to learn.

I would like to see someone make a compelling argument as to why Refocus should remain in the game.

Well, I don't think you could 5' move and charge, even with refocus, could you?

Heresy alert!!!!!!

Okay, I *really* think DnD is a roleplaying game. I don't think it is a miniatures game, and I don't think it is Magic without cards. Now, having been an avid Magic player for a few years, I can see the similarity between 3.0 to 3.5 to XPH to etc. and Magic. But I refuse to allow it to change DnD from an RPG to something...else.

I see no problem in allowing your character to 'charge' down that corridor.
(hey, I warned you about the heresy)

Sure, if he was 20' from the corner, no go. Or if he had to make a bunch of turns, outa luck. But come on people, he is *right there*. How many times have we seen people charge from around a corner or some other shelter. It just makes sense. If you can draw the line, it is just bent a little. ;-)

If it were outside, with rolling hills, that isn't 'straight'. If on a small dias, and have to charge down 3 steps, that isn't 'straight'. But they are both reasonable. I feel this is also.

The rules are meant to provide a balanced framework to play a game, it is not meant to cover every concievable situation.

If that is heresy, I will happily join you on the flames at the stake. I'm all about allowing things that aren't quite in-line with the rules, so long as A) they're not a dramatic violation of the rules, and, more importantly, B) they're just damned cool. I'll bend over backwards for a cool visual or "stunt" if it's not game-breaking.

Never fear lads! I no longer have that problem! :D Instead, one of those vile bugbears burst around the corner and stabbed at my poor PC, dealing serious damage. Anyway, thanks everyone for your input!

Coredump, Mouseferatu,

Looks like I'll be joining you in the flames of persicusion. It seems many people play these rules like a table top war game rather than a roleplaying game. I still hold to the same philosophy I used in 1st/2nd ed in that a DM can make reasonable changes to allow logical actions fit the game, even if they are not specificly covered in the rules or require a shoe horn and hammer to make them fit. Keeping the game as close to real world physics while maintaining the fantasy makes the game MORE thrilling!

Using a standard action:
Move around the corner, then ready an action to "partial charge if anything at all happens"

Immediately partial charge slightly before anything at all happens. Voila - one bendy charge. Admittedly half range, but eh, whatchagonnado?

Unfortunately this one works only in 3.0

In 3.5 there's a feat that lets you do it.
