D&D 3E/3.5 Will 3.5 hurt sales for 4E?

I've been chatting with my regular gaming buddies about 4E coming up, and while most of us are taking the "wait and see" approach, I keep hearing one comment crop up again and again (paraphrased):

"It looks interesting, but I'm gonna wait until 2011-2012 when they come out with 4.5 before I switch."

Is this a sentiment only amongst the players I know? Anyone else going to put off picking up 4E because of concern that a 4.5 will be along soon?

WoTC have repeatedly stated that there will not be a 4.5.

Seriously, people act as if they every time there has been an edition, there has been an immediate .5 update soon after. It has happened one time, I really dont see it should happen again, when they multiple times have stated that it was far from optimal doing so.

YMMV

Unfortunately, their reputation for keeping their word has taken a hit recently (fairly or unfairly).

Have they? I have never seen any WotC employee, especially any that were in a position to make that decision, state that. I've seen former employees who weren't at WotC at the time say that it wasn't optimal, but that's not the same thing.

Do you have a reference?

BTW, this topic has already been covered, in great depth, here.

The issue is not really what WOTC have or haven't stated - it's got more to do with the fact that a lot of people simply don't believe them.

And they won't belive them until they announce 5th edition. It's just something we have to learn to live with, I guess.

Seriously, why do people keep believing that WOTC tells the truth? They will not be honest about anything that may hurt their future sales. Telling people that there will be a 4.5 will hurt their sales, so of course they aren't going to tell you there will be.

Or maybe this time they will keep it 4.0 and just call it "errata" that will be in "X" printing and later.

Still, the fact is that many of them (maybe even most of them) feel that way because we got 3.5 only 3 years after 3E. Plus, the change to 3.5 was treated by WotC like a full new edition (all future products would be 3.5 only, even the two magazines, immediately upon it's release).

Yes, there are those who will feel like they are being lied to by WotC regardless. I think they would be a small fraction of what we had now if it wasn't for 3.5.

Hmm, maybe it was former employees, I honestly dont recall.

Although I could see why americans are short on trust these days, I havent checked if the majority of the distrustful come from over there.

/shrug

I guess its just one of those things I dont get, and thus should leave be.

Cheers

I think it would be most interesting to keep a list of all the ENWorld posters who say they aren't planning to buy any 4E products and then check that list a year from now to see how many have actually stuck to their guns :].
