Because every adventure lets you just rest in the middle of the dungeon whenever you feel like it with no consequences.

When you listen to all the people who complained about the 5 minute workday you get this impression.

You've never played in the DerrenWorld (tm) setting? There, even the most ridiculous things are commonplace, if they make a point.

I thought that was the result of incompetent DMs. Are you now arguing that incompetent DMs are the standard on which D&D should be judged?

This has little to do with 4E though--if you let your players take an extended rest whenever they feel like it, that's DM-style, not system dependent.

Even running the fan delve; the group wanted to take an extended rest in the hobgoblin chamber: along comes the returning bandits and they have ANOTHER fight, draining even more of their resources, plus they didn't get to rest. It's a dungeon, not a hotel. :D

Those people knew Rope Trick though. It's highly doubtful 4e PCs will ever get such easy access to extradimensional resting spots again. (Just to name an example that occured to me within one second flat.)

I know you really dislike 4e, Derren, and that you want to make that clear as often and strongly as possible, but a little context and thought could go a long way from making you the ENWorld laughing stock to a compelling authority one is inclined to listen to.

Because in 3E resources are frequently so badly used up in the first one or two fights that the DM often had to choose between allowing a silly and illogical rest and allowing a TPK.

Apparently *as far as I can recall* the number of healing surges that you get is dependent on your con. Thats a big deal.

Depends. More extra healing surges may not be that useful if the rest of the party is out of them and wants a long rest.

The lack of Rope Trick just means that the PCs have to leave the dungeon to rest. besides you don't know if there won't be a rope trick in 4E.

Generally, every DM who had Problems with 5 minutes workdays in 3E, rope trick or not, will have problems with 5 minute workdays in 4E.
