D&D 5E Will the 5e cleric's default iconic look be weilding mace and shield?

I'm curious Paraxis, you seem to really hate everything about 5th edition, but never run out of steam, why do you feel compelled to write so much about it? Is it because this is where all the cool kids hang out? :)

How could his comment be taken as hate?

Really, are you just trying to bait me? I mean I like 5e perfectly fine could you please explain where I have said I dislike 5e? Better yet how is pointing out that the mini is possibly a war cleric in any way hate?

Since the days of 2E, when the PHB introduced specialty priests, the mace and shield cleric has only survived through the power of tradition, which I think is ok, as I believe there's something to love about a cleric wielding a shield in one hand and a mace in the other, even if wielding a quarterstaff is mechanically better*.

I don't expect a lot of mace and shield clerics, though. They'll remain what they have been since the days of 2E: a legacy for those who want to play the classic archetype. In general, I believe that the ambitions of cleric players have grown far beyond that.

Anyway, I just hope that this thread doesn't go the "they should improve the mace so I don't feel stupid when I don't use a quarterstaff" way.

*I don't know if the versatile property is really important here. As a life cleric, I'd drop my weapon before dropping my shield!

At least it seems the mace is a competitive choice in the sense that it is only 5 gp, so though more expensive for no good reason, it is not a major price to pay if you want to weild it, and if you plan to use a shield all the time, the versatile advantage of the staff is not relevant most of the time. I'd prefer if the mace was slightly better than a staff wielded in one hand, but I think my cleric player can live with this.

I think you are usually quite fair in your critique... there may be someone you could be mistaken with... also starting with a P...

Polaris?

Paraxis to me, (to offense), seems to be an over-enthusiastic youth of 4th edition style preferences (nothing wrong with that), who nevertheless posts dozens of times in 5th edition forums about how everything in 5th ed is bad in an offhand sort of way. Even if one or two of his critiques are valid, that doesn't mean they will have any effect.

In short, he's writing for himself to avenge the honor of 4th edition design. I myself might write how I liked 4th's weapon table better due to balance and diversity of weapon choice, but I would never imagine in a million years state that the weapon table is sufficient to acquiesc or adhere to a given game. The weapon table is in the hands of the DM, but I've never seen a single DM in my 30+ years of gaming ever houserule the base weapon damage table.

So it's nice to critique the system or the tables or certain specifics, but once the rules are off to the printers, it's time to give up on stuff about AEDU or melee types being able to cast pseudo-Cure Wounds while they attack three times in the same round with AC 22.

No, I'm simply curious about what you seem to be trying to accomplish with your flood of posts about D&D Next / 5th edition.

Are you on board or not? Because if you're not, don't waste our time sharing your game design preferences or biases because they are less than pertinent to anyone and you are just tilting at windmills.

This is not really a helpful thing to post. At EN world there are a variety of preferences for various editions and different games. I think most here appreciate debating the diversity of opinions even when they diverge from their own and do so in a respectful manner.
