if i add the template winged creature (+2 ecl) to a human and give him 2 levels of... well anything really. what are my max skill ranks? am i a 4th level character with max skill ranks of 7 or am i a 2nd level character with max skill ranks of 5?

I understand i don't gain any Bab or skill points or anything for the templated levels i'm just not sure how they affect level dependant abilities like skills, also do i get my 3rd level feat at 1st level? and my first attribute increase at 2nd? or do i wait till my actual levels in a class are 3rd and 4th?

I believe you are effectively third level when you start with that character. For skill ranks, feats, and everything else. I'm sure someone who knows better will confirm or correct me.

If you have a +2 ECL race, and you are a 2nd level fighter for example...

You have all the feats, skills, attribute bonuses, max ranks, hit dice, caster levels (if applicable) of a 2nd level character. You get your bonus attribute point when you get to FIGHTER level 4, not character level.

However, for determining how much experience you get from combat, and how much experience you need to reach your next level, you count as the total of your ECL + your class levels (ie 4).

Basically what this means, is that while everyone else in the party was level 4, you would only be level 2. However, in terms of experience, you're treated as IF you were level 4 - so you get the same experience they do. You have to get the same amount of experience normally required to get to level 5 in order to get your third class level.

All creatures gain a feat with their first HD, and then every 3 HD's after that. Your max Skills are your HD + 3

So if you're a winged human at 1st level (ECL 3), You'd get your human feat* and your 1st level feat, and your max skill ranks would be 4.

*I'm pretty sure you still get your Human Bonus feat, please correct me if I am wrong

Hammy: Whether or not he got the "human" bonus feat would depend on whether or not a bonus feat was one of the traits of the "Winged Human" race he was creating.

Templates add abilities, not subtract them.

Ahhh... I thought he was creating a new race of winged humanoids. ;)

In that case... I'm pretty sure that you would still get the human bonus feat.

so lemme see if i have this straight, I take a +2 level adjustment template and i gain the benefits of that template but i gain no benefits of actually gaining 2 levels or hit dice. right?

so for example if i'm 2nd level and gain a +2 template i need the exp points to get to 5th level to increase to 3rd level. but otherwise i'm just a 2nd level character.

so if i need to get a class skill up to 8 to qualify for a prestige class i'll have to wait till i'm 7th level before i can actually get it.
since 2 levels are eaten up by the template

but if i was a monster class i would add the HD and the class levels for my skill maximums and my number of feats right?

wahhh... I'm still new as to how Monster Hit Dice levels work in comparison to ECL levels... even more confusing are the new races in the Races of Faerun that have BOTH monster hit dice AND an ECL in them.

However, I believe that for monster hit dice, you get feats and skill points for your "monster levels", but NOT attribute point increases? Someone who actually has Savage Species should be able to answer this one... ;)
