Wisdom = Willpower... huh?

1E didn't have skills as such - those weren't introduced till 2E. In 2E, the only "perception" type skills we had were direction sense and weather sense; both were modified by Wis. Wisdom as perception I can totally get - it's the ability to process information you see/hear/sense, even if it doesn't register on the conscious mind. It's intuitiveness.

I remember it applying vs illusions and mind control, either of which can sort of apply to perception. It's simply a matter of assigning stuff to one of the 6 stats when they were throwing stuff places. From then on, it just kept going...

I didn't know that. I thought that saves in 4E could be modified by two different stats, though?

1) 4e "saving throws" are a simple d20 roll, 10+ saves
2) Ref, Fort, Will are now "defenses" just like AC. Ref is dex or int, fort is str or con, will is cha or wis. You use whichever is higher.

Speed (phys=dex, mental=int)

IRL mental speed = reaction time, and is intelligence based - the higher your intelligence the faster you react to stimulus. Speed once you begin moving is determined by fast-twitch muscle mass.

However, in D&D both physical and mental reaction speed is determined by Dexterity.
