Check the "Alternatively" paragraph near the end of Detect Thoughts. The main difference is range.

Detect Thoughts, paragraph 4

Also, I'm honestly not sure if Detect Thoughts tells you what direction the thoughts are coming from when you can't see the creature... although the creature's own surface thoughts might tell you.

Legend
In a pitched fight, where she’d ambushed Fergus, the witcheress might have had the advantage. That was the way of the Cat School. Evade. Surprise. Poison and backstab. Though Kynee might be fast enough to parry elven arrows, Fergus’ onslaught knocks her breath from her lungs and leaves a slight cut along her sword arm. However, Kynee is too spry, rolling and tumbling backwards. Even as the mists swallow her, she looks up from under furrowed brows, ”Let’s see how well those griffon eyes of yours work when I pluck them out…”

Reaching out with her senses through the thick impenetrable fog, Elora senses two creatures first: one, which must be Kynee, is full of conflict and agression; the other, the old witch, overflows with fascination and scorn. However, there is something else in the background, multiple vague intelligences that are dormant as if dreaming; they seem to overlap where Elora recalls seeing the stone menhirs before the mists swallowed the hilltop.

Barakor’s blind charge through the mists lead him barreling through the brush, small burrs clinging to his beard as he stumbles over old stones. Once he feels gravel under feet and turns left, his shield grazes against one of the menhirs, the grinding echoing in the mist. He must be somewhere in the innermost circle of the stone henge. To the north echoes the grunting of some massive brute, silhouettes of menhirs and trees seeming to distort in the mists, making it seem like they might become trolls at any moment.

Even as some of you begin to press deeper into the fog, you can hear whispers in Elder Speech echoing from the fog in multiple directions, and the fog coils into surreal amorphous shapes, becoming more solid. Tendrils seem to grip at your appendages, sheaths, and cloaks, and wisps reminiscent of screaming skulls intermittently dart through the air.

GM: This is a lair action called Solid Fog (based on the old D&D spell), that causes the fog cloud to become difficult terrain for you, and causes any ranged weapon attacks to be automatic misses. Additionally, strong wind requires twice as long to disperse an area of Solid Fog (i.e. gust of wind requries concentration for a round to disperse it) or twice as much force (e.g. casting gust of wind with a higher level spell slot or something similar).

First Post
Talashia forces her way through the fog, trying to orient herself using Kynee's voice and the witch's incantations, and the half-glimpsed shadows in the mist.

"A cloud," she grumbles, irritably shooing grasping skeletal hands away as she goes. "How quaint."

When she figured she was more or less in a good place...this didn't have to be especially precise...Talashia threw her hands up and called to the sky, "Winds, to me!"

There was a gathering roar in the treetops...the howl of countless leaves and branches bending in a sudden gale. It rose behind Talashia and gusted hard against the unnatural fog summoned by the witch!

(Move a few squares south and west, then Gust of Wind aimed at where she thinks Kynee is!)

Legend
For a brief moment, Talashia can make out silhouettes moving in the mists, her magic sending the one that must be Kynee hurtling backward like a twig in a storm, bouncing off the menhirs and statues at the center of the circle.

GM: The line on the map represents Talashia's gust of wind; within the spell's line, the fog is just fog cloud, NOT Solid Fog like everywhere else.

Kynee Strength save vs. gust of wind (DC 13): 1d20+5 8 fails

Old witch Strength save vs. gust of wind (DC 13): 1d20+5 18 succeeds

impact damage vs. Kynee: 1d6 2 bludgeoning damage

Tamaran drops his bow and draws his shortswords, maybe he could impress the Witcher with his bravery, that and this fog is something else. The elf remembers he dropped his bow at the outer edge of the circle by a stone as he heads off in the direction of his prey.

The wolf Shamra has his own way of dealing with the fog raising his nose and sniffing the air.

Wolf will move as close as possible to where ever he figures his prey is and will pass this information onto Tamaran who will also move that way drawing his swords.

So it dawned upon me that o made my wolf a sheet but didn't share it! Ill fix that.
