I voted for Halflings but that is only because the first D&D character I ever played was a halfling. Nothing to do with LotR at all surprisingly (although most people seem to dislike halflings because of LotR rather than want to play them anyway).

Now that I think about it, I really like/identify with aberrations.

An aberration has a bizarre anatomy, strange abilities, an alien mindset, or any combination of the three.

The first, maybe not. Probably not the second either. The alien mindset seems possible. I feel like I tend to pick up on things that most people don't. Conversely, I also feel like things that are obvious to most people often go right over my head. :)

ALthough I can't think of a specific one. Mind flayers are right out. The whole brain craving, tentacle waving thing makes me think that a zombie got it on with a squid.

overbearing, Laughing maniacly when my gas sickens others, overeating, enjoyng frightning people and other odious habits and opinions. I'd assume half orc. Bru-u-u-rp!!

Human. Notwithstanding my lack of "identification" with any nonhuman race, I prefer playing humans because I'm uninterested in the stereotypes of the common D&D races.

That said, I'm more open to nonhuman characters in a setting like Eberron where they're free of the same old Tolkienesque tropes.

Well let's see...

When I'm feeling honorable, I'll go with Hollow Knights. If I'm feeling vindictive, Ratmen. Mostly I go with Ratmen and Assatthi. High Gorgons are just when I want to kill PCs. :p :)

hmmm...my preference would be

vampire, elf, human, or halfling....

in that order....

as for other races I've enjoyed playing....

Thri-kreen

mongrelman (that character eventually became a human female with 18 Chr thanks to the Deck of many things...it was odd role playing that first month...that first cycle)

humanoid bat (stats as a halfling, but gimped a bit for a glide ability) for a planescape game

ghoul
cambion/half-fiend (satyr/succubus)

There are a couple of races that I always think I will enjoy but don't....and those are half-dragons and dwarves. I like them...but I think I should just play them in one shots.

I really can't say that races are the defining trait for my characters. In general I think the genders I play are more defining. My males characters are usually family oriented polygamous, and hetero. My females are usually monogamous lesbians. Really the only exceptions are just games that didn't continue long enough to bring out relationships (i.e. 1 or 2 shot games)
