Wizards and Cure Spells

"It doesn't appear on their spell list" is a viable answer. But what is it about Bard scrolls that makes some of them scribeable, and some not?

You already gave the answer yourself. It's all about the respective class spell lists.

There is some overlap between the bard and the wizard spell list, and those arcane scrolls can be used by both, but the spells, that appear only on one of those two lists, cannot be used by the other class (except with UMD and other such means).

Basically the scroll has only some information, that is relevant for learning the spell from it. That's the spell name mostly, which is important here. The level, who scribed the scroll and such information are not relevant then.

And what about spells scribed at different levels? Bards scribe Break Enchantment as a 4th level spell, but it's 5th level on the Sor/Wiz list. If a Wizard learns Break Enchantment from a Bard's arcane scroll, is it a 4th level or 5th level spell?

As appropriate for the character.

The scroll might be a 4th level spell, but if the wizard learns it, it's then a 5th level spell.

So would this be the answer the collective intelligence would give regarding using say the Extra Spell feat from Complete Arcane?

A spellcaster could use the feat to learn any spell, but could not cast any spell they learned if it does not appear on their class list.

talk to your DM

any spellcasting class can still research a spell.

you make up the stuff and give it to your DM for approval.

it costs money, time, and possibly even a quest or hook to find components.

Succinctly put, yes.

There are other feats - like, say, Arcane Disciple - that specifically add spells to your class list. Extra Spell does not specifically add a spell to your class list, ergo it does not.

Putting cure spell on the wizards list will make the clerics stronger. Clerics seemed to have been given more power to compensate for the fact the party will be soaking up thier spells for healing. If the wizard has to use spells to cure & PREPARE them as such, he will find himself the new party band aid.

Exactly, as with all threads about that very topic, that's the conclusion. Of course, essentially, a spellcaster shouldn't even be able to learn it in the first place. But that's just hypothetic, noone learns a feat, that has no effect whatsoever. ;)

Bad axe games, heroes of high favour: elves has a feat called gifted healer that allows a wizard to cast all Cleric Conjuration spells as arcane spells 3 levels higher.

Its a great feat if you want to use a lot of wands :)

Its probably simpler, if you can do it, to take one level as Cleric. That way even if you stay on good terms with your diety you can use all the wands you want. I imagine, in game terms, close relations with the dominant church would be good for letting you progress in your arcane studies - might get some business thrown your way as well :)

That would work in a normal campaign, but in ours, all of the gods are dead. So there are no clerics.
