has anyone played or witnessed a wizard who never took metamagic feats?

i am making a wizard and i want to concentrate on maxing his DC for illusion and transmutation spells. spell focus, greater spell focus, spell penetration, greater spell penetration, the works basically. but my plan leaves no room for metamagic (my other feats are reserved for item creation etc).

is the upped dc worth it to lose out on metamagic?

Meta magic feats are nice, but they are not so important you need them. I've yet to havea PC wizard go to high lefvels without selecting at least one, but I've made a bunch of NPC Wizards without any and that has worked out just fine.

I'm playing a Halfling Abjurer/Rogue who is aiming for Arcane Trickster... I haven't taken any metamagic feats, and I'm not really planning on any. He's going to lean more toward the item creation feats, especially Wands and Wonderous Items.

I'm currently playing an Elf Ninja/Diviner who is also aiming for Arcane Trickster. I don't plan on taking any metamagic feats either. I simply don't have the feats to spare. I'll be focusing more on getting my spell DCs up with Spell Focus and Lace Spell, as well as taking some ranged attack feats (Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot) and possibly an item creation feat (most likely Craft Wonderous Item).

For most wizards, metamagic feats are useful, but not essential. And when you absolutely have to have a certain metamagic feat, you can always pick up a metamagic rod if you have the money. The main exception to this is if your character is your party's only buffer. If so, you should pick up Extend Spell and probably Empower Spell. Most of the time, however, the party cleric can handle this role..

Okay, Forrester for the Elf Ninja I can see...

But, historically, Diviners have been one of the penultimate useless classes available. I'm not sure if 3e bears this out, but I think the Diviner couteracts the Aelf baddass Ninjaboy.
