Wolfgang Baur has announced a new project through his Open Design pseudo-imprint. It's Kobold Quarterly.

It definitely sounds like it's worth the cost of a trial membership to take a look at the first year. Here is the text of his announcement at his Open Design site.

I'm happy to announce the launch of Kobold Quarterly, an Open Design 'zine for gamers! The first issue will appear this summer, and all those who subscribe before the first issue ships will be charter subscribers. Given the popularity of Paizo's Demonomicon, I would expect the "Princes of Hell" series to get some interest.

Eight Kobold Answers

1. Yes, this is the big announcement I've been hinting about to patrons for a while.
2. Yes, I will be accepting art submissions, though I'll only pay for commissioned pieces.
3. Yes, I'm looking for article queries from Open Design patrons.
4. No, I will not accept more than one query at a time.
5. No, there are no writer's guidelines yet.
6. Yes, subscribers will get to pick the contents of future issues and the subjects of future interviews.
7. Yes, the Erik Mona interview will appear in the first issue. So will the ecology article.
8. Yes, if not enough folks subscribe it will fold. I'm not worried.

Subscriptions are just $12 for a year (4 issues). More information is available at the Free City site.

Contents listed for first issue:

* The first installment of the Princes of Hell series
* A Dungeon Design column about the Underdark
* Monster tables for the Empire of the Ghouls
* An interview with Paizo Publisher Erik Mona
* A monster ecology chosen by Open Design patrons
* Overview of the Free City of Zobeck
* And more!

I haven't subscribed yet but it has definitely got my interest. I'm waiting to hear a little bit more about it before I throw my money into the ring. At $12 for 4 issues it is definitely cheap enough for me to give it a go, especially with Wolfgang's reputation preceding him.

I sat down with Wolf for the interview mentioned here on Friday, and based on the questions he asked, I can tell he's putting a lot of work into this. The whole thing went about an hour and a half, and he asked some very insightful questions. I'm eager to see how the rest of the magazine looks.

Lord knows, we could all use a good gaming magazine these days. :)

So... there are kobolds??

Oh yes! And I so badly want to run a "Trap of the Month" centerfold, but.... I suck at drawing traps. ;)

Actually, it's a smaller version of Dragon. A magazine for D&D gamers that covers setting, PC tactics, monsters, ecologies, interviews, and so on.

Wolfgang-

Just to confirm: will this be pdf only, or a print magazine? I love your stuff, but would not subscribe to a pdf mag for the same reason I will not be using WOTC's digital intiative. Print is not dead (yet)!

My understanding is that KQ will be a PDF initially with a possible (probable?) Print-on-Demand option. If there is enough people to support a print version that would be ideal.

Mr. Baur is very much interested in the community. If you want it in print, subscribe, voice your opinion, and get your buddies involved!
