I'm not going to GenCon, but I am sort of curious to see what this seminar is all about. If any of you do decide to go, would you post about it here later?

Thanks!
If there is interest, I will post when I get back...

I am signed up for a whole boat load of Seminars... and, I am most excited for this one.

I have this vision of a crowded room full of male geeks waiting for the females to show up ;)

Well, it hasn't been like that in the two previous years the seminar has run. My wife ran the seminar on women and gaming the last two years and it ended up being a very good discussion about what women's experiences have been in gaming and other interests.
My wife has a friend running the seminar this year because we're having a baby due within a week of Gen Con and she isn't allowed to travel that far from her OB.

For seminars, you usually don't have to worry about attendence until the room starts to overflow. So if you're interested, go even if you haven't had a chance to pre-register for it.

Since I am going to miss it I would like to see such a post and hear about the discussion.

Actually it has just come to my attention that there may be more than one gamer women seminars this year at Gen Con. I didn't download any pre-reg stuff because I wasn't going to go and so, now that pre-reg has closed, can't confirm whether this is true or not.
There has been one titled Gamers and Geek Girls for the last 2 years. That's the one my wife ran, if you're curious. The one on Thursday night may be the new one. If so, I have no idea what it will be like.

There are a number of male feminists these days, from what I'm seeing. I myself am one. It may have to do with the breaking down of the notion that the other gender is the enemy until marriage, and so one should only hang out with your own gender (A notion which always makes me think, "Um... But I'm straight, I -like- women.")

Online gaming doesn't hurt, for several reasons, including:

1) Finding a real, proven female on the net makes romantic RP a great deal more relaxing (I've had 'female' characters try to seduce my characters, or my characters teasing but refusing them, and, when failing, suddenly announcing their RL age and male gender...).

2) Female gamers on the net are, on average, more in to the RP itself than male gamers, which makes them a joy for those males who DO game for something other than to stroke their ego, bash stuff, and talk dirty.

3) Smart women (which are easier to find in D&D than at a football game, though of course, one can like either and be of any intelligence) are fricking sexy, and a gamer, now that the "Lets give females crud stats" era is over, has a slightly better chance, on average, of encountering one to learn the fact. So much easier to appreciate someone who's not trying to be a Stepford-style person because of social training. Yay progress.

The SEM Gamers and Geek Girls, for a first time GenCon-er looked too much like a meet and greet for single gamers during pre-reg... and, as a married woman, that was right out.

Had I know that it was, in fact, a SEM for Gamer Girls, I would have been there in a heart beat... have to see if I can weasle my way in.

Hi-

Why go to a seminar? Why not just use that time to play D&D, or watch anime flicks, or just plain hangout with your buddies? Lifes to short so game on instead.

Gamers and Geek Girls seminar

Please feel welcome to come to the seminar on Saturday. I am running it for my friend (the pregnant wife of billd91). When requesting seminar space from GenCon, I have to put a number of people for registrants, but the seminar is free and there should be room for all to come and discuss gaming.

I'm sorry you thougth it was a meet and greet for single gamers. We will look at how the description was written and see if we can make it seem less that way next year.

Doomed: Seminars can be fun too! This particular one is great for women to discuss the various issues they have faced while gaming and I think a few men last year learned some valuable things about women gamers as well.
