Woot!! WotC renews Dragonlance license!

If WotC has phrased the announcement this way, the reaction would have gone over better. Mind you, in this case, "better" is a relative term. People still would have balked (people always balk when it comes to change), but I don't believe that as many people would have that pi$$ed off and that many people would have sworn off WotC products. Granted I don't know how many people have forgiven WotC by now and have gone right back to buying their products, but I believe there would have been less of a hiccup if they had phrased the announcement differently.

Exactly my point, the reaction of the OP is one of glee (pun intended) just because the way the announcement is worded, but they are still revoking the license.

*waves* the OP would like to respond to that. My glee was in misreading the renewal as it stood for Janurary 2008 not 2009. :p

Isn't it interesting that they are now saying that it's (also) Forgotten Realms' problem? :\

I think the novels have always been more profitable than the game books, but that's just a guess. Eberron's novels have been fun enough, and even had major stuff, without going the "world controlling/ world altering" way that DL &FR have.

DL is the worse for it though, IMO, because the authors sometimes seem to lack a fundamental understanding of the actual setting. Conclave of Wizards was horrible, IMO, and the Solamnic Rising series seems to have been written for FR or something and had the name changed to DLness.

Then, the DL gamebooks had to follow these things, and somehow justify that Solamnic Rising started with an entirely different setting than had existed in the previous novels!

FR, they have big wars and such, but they at least generally fit into the scope of the world.

I pretty much stopped reading (new) novels (set in FR and DL) about 7 years ago, so I can't comment. But yeah, if I'd thought they were consistently good, I would probably still be reading them :)
