Woot!! WotC renews Dragonlance license!

This is the part I find interesting (emphasis mine):

"Wizards continues to publish novels set in the Dragonlance world, including the Lost Chronicles series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and looks forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of Dragonlance in 2009."

I wonder what WotC has planned for DL in '09.

They can look forward to it all they like. The very significant problem that WotC faces with DragonLance, is that while the brand may be WotC's property - it's Tracy's and Margaret's baby and always has been. Their names on the prodcuts are more important than WotC's logo on the product. The goodwill in the brand requires their involvement.

If they are not involved, it doesn't really matter what logo WotC slaps on the product or what characters they purport to sell. It's not the real DragonLance, it's DINO (Dragonlance In Name Only). Tracy and Margaret are more closely identified with that brand than are the original creators of any other brand WotC owns.

While WotC may have had some success in selling a Greyhawk without EGG or a Forgotten Realms without Ed Greenwood - the same has never been true for DragonLance.

Now, of course, none of this means that Tracy and Margaret will not be involved in some future DL brand renovation at WotC. But... saying is one thing, doing is another.

Mind you, the movie has had Tracy's and Margaret's involvement from the start and as it's depicting the core story they created - that at least will stand or fall on its own merits.

At first I cheered....then I actually read it, and unless there's a typo, all it's saying is that the license has been extended by 1-month. Is this correct? What exactly does an extra month allow them to do?

And let's not forget that Ed Greenwood has had an active hand in at least through the numerous books he has written or contributed in.

Regarding the current edition Dragonlance products, I've really liked both the content itself and the balance they've had between fluff and crunch. This speaks to me about excellent design on both micro and macro levels, as it were. I don't know what the future of Dragonlance is, but I will keep my eyes peeled on future products by the people behind these wonderful products, whatever the system.

Still no Taladas book.....19 years and counting since the boxed set :(

With the fantastic novel trilogy, I'd have thought it would be a perfect chance.

I suppose this means that I should probably grab the module trilogy while it's still around..

Finish the hardcover adventure trilogy, probably.
