5E WotC Announces An Impending Announcement: New Setting, Storyline

Early this week, WotC announced on Twitter that today there would be some kind of announcement on their Twitch channel. Those who tuned in were treated to an an announcement that the new storyline will be announced at a live event in June.

The press release announcing the impending announcement also mentions a new setting, as well as the storyline, so it sounds like it might not be set in the Forgotten Realms (or maybe is in a new region - to 5E - of the Realms, such as Icewind Dale). The adventure and the setting might be the same thing, or they might be completely different things. Recently, WotC has released a bunch of settings: Eberron, Ravnica, Wildemount, and the upcoming Theros.

Fans of D&D will learn all about the new setting and storyline

The new storyline specifically will be revealed at 12pm PST (8pm GMT) on Thursday, June 18th.

The June event will raise money for Comic Relief, and will feature celebrities including Brandon Routh (Superman), and will preview the brand new storyline. It takes place June 18th-20th. Other names involved include Felicia Day, Deborah Ann Woll, Amy Acker, David Harbour, Matthew Lillard, and more.

Yeah, could be, this is coming before the book is fully released. Or...it could be something else ...
Mind you, the book was supposed to be out by now. It's only delayed because of the impending end of all things, so really it's not that unrealistic that they made an adventure tie-in, except for the fact that they didn't make an accompanying hardcover adventure for Ravnica and there's little reason to do it for Theros because MTG has already moved on from it story and product-wise.

That said, the new setting could just be another MTG setting, which I'm always up for because they're usually good and the newest set has an amazing dearth of story potential (a world where monsters mutate randomly because of a giant crystal obelisk that sends out magic shockwaves - What's not to love?) but I feel like they're sort of in a trend of "MTG setting > D&D setting > etc." with their releases so I'd like to see that continue, especially since there's some settings that very much need the love.

New setting? We're over here wanting back old settings. I really hope it's "new" as in it's a remastered old one.

Let it be Oriental Adventures, please. Kara-Tur finally. Yeah it'll never happen since WotC doesn't care for that sort of thing while everyone else does, but I can still hope right? Been hoping since the last Kara-Tur product.

Okay Imagine we assume we get a complete new setting.

DMG pg38 states the flavors of Fantasy are
  1. Heroic Fantasy (example given was Forgotten Realms)
  2. Sword And Sorcery (example given was Dark Sun)
  3. Epic Fantasy (example given was Dragonlance)
  4. Mythic Fantasy (the example was Greek Fantasy so that's Theros)
  5. Dark Fantasy (example given was Ravenloft)
  6. Intrigue (The example given was the Brimstone Angels.)
  7. Mystery
  8. Swashbuckling
  9. War
  10. Wuxia
  11. Crossing The Streams
My guess is a Intrigue and War setting due to celebs. Celebs and actors are best advertisement for intrigue or comedy to me.

WOTC doesn't seem to be too worried about pilfering things from other settings and transplanting them into Forgotten Realms all in the quest for the almighty dollar. I don't think they really care too much about Canon.
I don't think it's as nefarious as all that; creatively, there's a lot of reasons to write new stories that aren't bound by the strictures of 25 year old material.

I kind of feel like I am in an ideal spot. I played during the 1e era into the middle of 2e and then did not play for a long time, getting back in right before 5e. Which means when Wizards of the Coast announces that they are going to announce things I am perfectly happy to sit back and wait and am almost always excited and happy when the announcement is made

Well if is related at all to the DMs guild adventure they also mentioned in the link, it could be a Sea of Fallen Stars Campaign Guide, since it is set in Turmish , sort of Improved Sword Coast Adv guide? Idk. I like setting books regardless.
Since I'm running a campaign rn based around Sea of Fallen Stars and specifically Turmish, I almost was gleeful. And then remembered that we are discussing the post of the news of the announcement of the announcement.

Wish they had science-fantasy on there, as D&D-meets-Numenera-or-Exalted would be fun. Or cosmic/space fantasy (Spelljammer).

I also don't see Modern/Urban/Supernatural fantasy.

Urban fantasy likely fits under either Intrigue or Mystery, depending on whether or not the setting in question features a Masquerade (Mystery if yes, Intrigue if no). Ravnica's an urban fantasy setting that I'd say fits pretty solidly under the "intrigue" category, given that the political machinations between the guilds are the driving force of the setting (or at least its conflicts).

Space fantasy might similarly fall under one of the first few categories, perhaps?

I don't see it lining up with Icewind Dale at all. Curse of Strahd wasn't a setting book though. Barovia is a small part of the Domains of Dread and every part has a much different feel to them. I could see them easily deciding to run another adventure based off another a different domain and some of them could even serve as an entry to other settings.

Vecna is a Darklord in Ravenloft and can tie in with Greyhawk. Lord Soth and Vlad Drakov were both Darklords in Ravenloft and can tie in with Krynn.

I am not saying I really see any of these things happening but they barely dipped their toes in the water with Curse of Strahd when it comes the the Ravenloft setting so I could see more in the future.

Personally I am really bored with Forgotten Realms as the setting. They initially didn't want to muddy the water by introducing more settings but I think that ship has sailed. Rather than give us more MTG and Critical Role settings, how about we finally get to explore a little of other other famous settings that people have been asking for.
Ravenloft is one of those settings I loved, but ended up largely avoiding due to someone in outer non-regular D&D circle that had some obsession with vampires and the undead. I would loved to see more of it, but it's not as high on my list as a Birthright and Greykhawk. I would love to see a Vecna Greyhawk-Ravenloft adventure that details Vecna's domain alongside a Greyhawk campaign setting.

I've been away from Exalted for a long time, but I don't remember it having any science-fantasy elements. It was basically over-the-top Wuxia with a dash of Mythic Fantasy, as best I recall.

You mean Vecna Lives and Die Vecna Die? They got published ages ago, not sure why there would be a need to revisit them particularly since the Burning Peaks and Cavitus in particular were probably some of the least interesting Ravenloft domains

There was some magic-tech elements introduced - more heavily in the 2nd edition and the 'book of five directions' gazetteer books from memory. All relic stuff from way back in the history of the setting. Magic powered armour, magic kinda-mecha, flying ships with magic not-laser-cannons etc etc.
