5E WotC Announces An Impending Announcement: New Setting, Storyline

Early this week, WotC announced on Twitter that today there would be some kind of announcement on their Twitch channel. Those who heard that announcement and tuned in were treated to an announcement that the new storyline will be announced at a live event in June.

The press release announcing the impending announcement also mentions a new setting, as well as the storyline, so it sounds like it might not be set in the Forgotten Realms (or maybe is in a new region - to 5E - of the Realms, such as Icewind Dale). The adventure and the setting might be the same thing, or they might be completely different things. Recently, WotC has released a bunch of settings: Eberron, Ravnica, Wildemount, and the upcoming Theros.

Fans of D&D will learn all about the new setting and storyline

The new storyline specifically will be revealed at 12pm PST (8pm GMT) on Thursday, June 18th.

The June event will raise money for Comic Relief, and will feature celebrities including Brandon Routh (Superman), and will preview the brand new storyline. It takes place June 18th-20th. Other names involved include Felicia Day, Deborah Ann Woll, Amy Acker, David Harbour, Matthew Lillard, and more.

Curious that they refer to Brandon Routh as Superman, a role he played once a decade and a half ago, in a movie most people seemingly didn't like (personally I did), when Henry Cavill has played Superman in three movies much more recently, and Brandon Routh is probably best known today for playing The Atom in three different "Arrowverse" TV shows for about the same length of time as Cavill's DCEU role.

That was me. Anybody who plays Superman stays Superman in my book.

Hopper is arguably the most popular character on the show. David Harbour is probably the most popular actor from the show
Oh, I love David Harbor. Just sayin' its a show that revolves around a group of kids playing D&D - there was an official D&D tie in product and everything. So did they intentionally skip the obvious choices or was Harbour the only one one that would do it?

Finn Wolfhard: "If I can't be the DM I'm not doing it!"
Gaten Matarazzo: "D&D is too nerdy for me"
Caleb McLaughlin: "Sorry, I have an exclusive deal with Paizo"
Noah Schnapp: "My therapist says it could trigger my PTSD"
David Harbour: "I'm in!"

I have inside info. The new campaign is in the forgotten realms. As far as the new setting....no inside info unfortunately on that

Personally I am really bored with Forgotten Realms as the setting. They initially didn't want to muddy the water by introducing more settings but I think that ship has sailed. Rather than give us more MTG and Critical Role settings, how about we finally get to explore a little of other other famous settings that people have been asking for.
Speaking as someone who hopes to see at least some legacy settings revamped, I’m far more interested in new settings—including Magic, which are new to me and to D&D. All of those “famous settings” have been, and still could be, explored extensively. New and Magic settings have not.

I don't need inside info to know the campaign is in FR, the new campaign has been FR every single year!

I still suspect Lantan and then some Spelljammer/Mindflayer stuff. Maybe tie-ins to Icewind Dale as well, but I still think Lantan is more likely.

I'm think the setting and adventure are separate.

Adventure: Icewind Dale
Setting: ???
Hope so. I’m not a huge Ravenloft fan, but the Perkins quote makes me think Innistrad. I’m hoping for Zendikar or Planescape, but don’t think the latter will come out for another year or two.

The good thing about Innistrad and Zendikar is that I will save more money. They might be great settings but there are plenty of classic D&D settings that I love and would like to see new content for. I don't have much interest in learning more settings.

I don't see it lining up with Icewind Dale at all. Curse of Strahd wasn't a setting book though. Barovia is a small part of the Domains of Dread and every part has a much different feel to them. I could see them easily deciding to run another adventure based off another a different domain and some of them could even serve as an entry to other settings.

Vecna is a Darklord in Ravenloft and can tie in with Greyhawk. Lord Soth and Vlad Drakov were both Darklords in Ravenloft and can tie in with Krynn.

I am not saying I really see any of these things happening but they barely dipped their toes in the water with Curse of Strahd when it comes the the Ravenloft setting so I could see more in the future.

Vecna hasn't been a darklord since 2nd edition - he's no longer in Ravenloft, so to speak. But considering CoS's approach to the setting... who knows.

Lord Soth ditto. Drakov's not particularly strongly tied to Dragonlance. He's from Thenol in Taladas, but that's about it. He's never mentioned in any Dragonlance product or novel and appears to have been nothing more than a random mercenary.

Adventure: Icewind Dale

I was going to post something similar. If previous years are anything to go by, they spend most of the weekend hyping up the September product (usually an adventure), and then announce the November product at the end. So this could very well be the case again this time.

WOTC doesn't seem to be too worried about pilfering things from other settings and transplanting them into Forgotten Realms all in the quest for the almighty dollar. I don't think they really care too much about Canon.

He also played Superman in the Arrowverse.
