D&D 5E WotC Confirms Horror-themed Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

During WotC's Comic Relief charity-supporting livestream this evening, presenters Anna Prosser and Mica Burton confirmed that the September D&D adventure is, indeed, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. The adventure has a regular and limited edition cover. The presenters say this is the first time anybody has heard the title(?), and that this was the first time they'd seen the cover...

The adventure has a regular and limited edition cover.

The presenters say this is the first time anybody has heard the title(?), and that this was the first time they'd seen the cover.

Chris Perkins says its a horror adventure, with these of isolation and secrecy. Levels 1-12.

The deity antagonist, Auril, is a god who Perkins says is a lot like Hella from the Thor: Ragnarok movie. In this book, the Frostmaiden has multiple stat blocks depending on the form she takes. The book has over 50 stat blocks.

The book has lots of quests, each of which is a mini adventure. Or play through them all as an epic horror story emerges. A campaign, or slice it up.

The environment itself is a villain -- blizzards, avalanches, survival, limited food, fishing for Knucklehead Trout.

There's a number of sports and games for the characters to play. A "Goliath sport" for example.

320 pages, poster map, for levels 1-12.

For the 10 minutes or so before the stream launched, the "Coming Soon' page featured the cover art (which was leaked by D&D Beyond last week).

The entry for Kelvin's cairn suggests the dwarves are all gone?

Note that the map shows the "heraldry" that was mentioned for each of the Ten Towns.

The illustration of Easthaven looks very much like it does in the Icewind Dale CRPG.

The entry of Caer-Dineval has a nice illustration of knucklehead trout. It mentions the frozen lake.

Yes but do you folks get what is meant with "Sacrifice to Auril" followed by a "humanoid" or "warmth"?

Does it mean now that if the denizens of ten towns catch an Orc they sacrifice it to Auril? And if they cannot find anyone they sacrifice their campfire?

Different towns have a different sacrifice listed: humanoids, food or warmth. What is not clear is if that is a demand made by Auril of the towns, or something the towns have chosen to do in the hope of appeasing her.

If you’re trying to create isolation and horror, low levels help.

This is an appealing offering. Sandboxy mini-adventures is what grabbed me — the alt cover is badass too. The idea of playing a horror story in the cold? D&D does Beyond the Mountains of Madness? This does seem like a very useful resource as well as adventure book.
 

It's hard to do horror when the monsters are more afraid of the PCs...


We do need something for high level characters, but horror won't work. It would have to be superhero.

In the mystical land of Canada....

To be honest, I feel like its been a few years since we've had an ''Icewind Dale''-style winter here. The weather is all off: we have big snowstorm and sharp temperature drops, but seems to me they last way less longer than before.

I do miss them though. The old CRPG and this new set bring some warm (well...cold) memories to mind :)
 


Look at the "Chardalyn Deposits" entry on the map. Sounds a bit like "shard-alin" doesn't it? This the text: "A crystalline substance created by ancient magic more than a century ago, it is strong as metal though considerably easier to work with than steel. It is said those who handle chardalyn grow ambitious, paranoid or even violent but the material is in high demand from artisans who travel to the Dale."

Verrrry interesting. Note that “more than a century ago,” depending on exactly how much more is “more,” could mean that these crystals were created at any time during (or as a result of the events of) the pre-4e Drizzt novels.

I wonder if one plot point of this module will be that everyone who’s been exposed to chardalyn has been secretly baking Crenshinibon Cinnabons . . .
