WotC: Kindle/E-Fiction Books? When?

So one of the things that came out of the PDF problem was the possibility of some electronic fiction books down the road.

Anyone has any further information on that? Release dates or anything of that nature?

Are they already out?

Yeah I have a 10' 1280x1024 iRex DR1000S and I want the rulebooks etc in PDF or mobipocket or some other secure format.

Like yesterday! At least I am enjoying eDungeon and eDragon and tons of good quality 3PP PDFs (thanks One Bad Egg)

I'm looking forward to getting a Kindle DX in September after the Big Family Vacation. The utility that this promises, having about 300 pdfs for work and play always available, is very exciting. I hope that I would be able to import some WotC and pre-WotC D&D pdfs on there as well.

I'm not going to buy the Kindle DX, as apparently it's not possible to add annotations to PDFs - and I found making annotations to ebooks one of the most useful features of my Kindle 1.

I'll probably save my money until I can afford the iRex - or I will wait for one of the larger ebook readers coming out next year.

I have the Kindle DX and I've been loading RPG PDFs on it almost daily. All are readable although some look much better then others. Dragon and Dungeon didn't look as nice as I would have liked. Most of the retro clones look really sharp. You can check my blog below for my DX-ability reviews of about a dozen PDFs with more to come.

Basic rule of thumb: printer friendly PDFs look much nicer.

While the Swords & Wizardry pdfs look excellent, there's something about their pdf encoding that makes page turning an agonizingly slow experience. I've tried reducing the size of the files but there's some strange text artifacts (i.e. a bunch of characters piled atop each other) I run into when I do that.

Not getting a Kindle or buying any kind of DRM-laden file from anyone. Sell me pdfs I can freely move from my PC to my netbook to my smartphone if the urge strikes me. Don't try to lock me into hardware or use spyware because you think I might be pirating.

Unfortunately theirs no such thing as a secure format. I'm guessing the search for this dream is the reason it's taking so long! :p

The music and video game industry seems to be coming to terms with this, as we're seeing less and less DRM. Hopefully it won't take the print publishing industry too long, and non-drm'd pdfs and ebooks will become the norm.

Uhm, the Kindle can read non-DRM mobi format e-books, and most other formats can be converted to mobi. You DON'T have to buy your books from Amazon.

ALL the PDFs I've been reading on the DX are DRM free. To tell the truth I don't think the Kindle DX can read DRM PDFs, but I could be wrong.

Does Amazon hope you will buy your books from them? Of course! But you don't need too.

I understand your rant, but it is misplaced in this case. If you want to rant about the excessive cost of the Kindle be my guest, I might just join you ;)
