WOTC poll - Loathsome Villains

Greybar

No Trouble at All
Occasionally evil can become commonplace. We have all had game sessions when we tromp around with a "Who's next?" attitude, where stock bad guys just aren't boiling our blood. When bagging the maniacal sorcerer, mopping up the marauding orcs, fending off the ethergaunt, and foiling a Sith plot becomes stale, what can our GMs do to make a villain really slap us in the face?

Tell us what makes a villain really vile. We've compiled a list of terrible traits from the Book of Vile Darkness and Star Wars: The Dark Side Sourcebook. Select the characteristic you think motivates the darkest hearts and send us your response. We'll collect your replies and post the results May 21, 2003.
What makes villains loathsome?

It's true. If you want your players to REALLY hate someone, have them abuse a cute animal. It's the kiss of death.

Unless they ARE a cute animal... "if cats looked like frogs, we'd understand was nasty brutish little creatures they really are" -Terry Pratchett.

kitties get away with murder...

Actually, cats are one of the most sadistic creatures on the planet. How many animals have you seen that hunt and kill simply for their own amusement? It is a good thing they are so small.

You know how some people put bells on their cat's collors? They do this so that the cat can't sneak up on little birds and such. Well... according to a recent study, this actually makes the cats more lethal. They adapt to the bells and learn to move about so stealthily that the bells don't jingle. Obviously this just hones their skills to make them more efficient hunters.

ok... now back on the subject at hand.

I voted for greed. Why? Greed can cause a person to do all of the other things on the list. Not a very good poll in my opinion.

They are some of the greatest predator nature has ever created and the house cat is top of the heap. There was a show on Nature that did a study on them and the results were shocking.

A one selection villian, that is very limiting. I mean a villian, a good villian, a great villian should be more than just one selection.

You want villains that players will hate, have them use Modernkainen's Disjunction, or be a two-handed sword wielding psychic warrior with the Sunder/Great Sunder combination. :D
