WotC_Husclar: Goblin Battle!

Go check out the article on magic items - I'm pretty sure "ye olde magicke shoppe" is still open for business in the default setting, since a level 11 character can expect to have almost a dozen magic items. The good news is, only three of those (weapon, armor, and cloak) really play into the character's stats, so the DM can eschew the rest without much difficulty (and even those three pieces with only minimal trouble).

There are no magick shops in D&D unless you put them in your game. I don't even see why this has ever been a valid discussion topic.

As for the 'upgrading', the first thing that popped into my mind was "oh, good, you can just make your existing stuff better instead of having to trade up!"

Have you considered that not everyone is a DM, and thus not everyone has full control over the games they play in? Granted, thats not my issue, since I am a DM, 99% of the time. :) Magic Shops are a problem, I was merely hoping they were taking 4e away from that genre, nothing more. Won't change one bit on how I feel about 4e :)

PCs in 4E are still expected to have +X items where X depends on the level. If those items come from loot or are bought doesn't matter as long as the PCs have them.

Well, what do you do with a DM whose play style / campaign doesn't match your expectations?
I guess other then talking with him about it I don't really see a solution (that doesn't end up with you DMing or not playing at all, or looking for another DM/group)

I also don´t like that sentence...

...he should have been more specific and should have used other words...

(enhanced by..., exchanged against...)

On the other hand, I feel like it's counterproductive to weigh everything a playtester says like it's coming from the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. :D (not saying you are, here, but I've seen posters before fix on one poor word choice and make some really off-the-mark assumptions about a game element.)

Hmm... Actually, one thing I doubt I will see, since it be hard to implement. But partial armour/mix-and-matched armour. So leather jerkin and pants, but with a metal breastplate. Or chain shirt and metal pauldrons, etc.

Upgrades/change could then be you replace a existing piece of armour for a better equivalent, so you slowly build up your armour to how you wish it to be. Would also make the idea of a rag-tag army, or scavengers more interesting with their jumbled together armour.

Are you stating the obvious because you think I don't know this, or merely because you are "mad" that +items will still be a "must have" in 4e?

And for the record, it does matter to me, even though it is very simple to houserule. I was hoping that 4e would ditch this one video-gamey aspect, that it (DND) picked up with 3rd edition, since it is one of the few things that I think gives my favorite game that kind of feel. Not per encounter powers, not feat trees, and not meta-roles for the different classes.

YMMV

/shrug
