Would Appreciate Help Classifying Modern Firearms For d20

I created a character for Aberrant d20 who has the power of Matter Creation.

What I request help on is classifying modern firearms to the Weapon Proficiency Feats. The reason for this is because my character only has Simple Weapon Proficiency and I'm not entirely sure which modern firearms would fall into this feat. Aberrant d20 doesn't seem to classify modern firearms into these feat categories.

Here's my first impression though:

Simple Weapon Proficiency
Revolvers, single shot and bolt action rifles, non-automatic shotguns.

Martial Weapon Proficiency
Magazine fed pistols (such as the Glock), Sub Machine Guns, Assault weapons such as M16s.

Exotic:
Heavy Machine Guns, Chain Guns, Automatic Combat Shotguns

As well as explosives like hand grenades. Dynamite could fall under Simple Weapon Proficiency while a Grenade could fall under Martial Weapon Proficiency.

I don't have any logical reason for classifying the firearms the way I did, but just intuition.

So, how would you classify modern firearms?

I'd start by taking out my copy of Ultramodern Firearms D20, or checking out D20 Modern and similar systems, like Spycraft- you may just find exactly what you're looking for.

Barring that, go to the library and check out something like the Diagram Group's Weapons or something from the Jane's series.

What you have seems logical enough for simple RPG purposes. Depending on your background and your seriousness, you might consider going to your local range and actually firing a few civilian-legal firearms (many ranges offer rentals, at least in my area). You might find that the experience offers you a fresh perspective on how to group the weapons or on new rules for using or mastering them. Back when my wife qualified for her concealed carry permit, for example, she was quite surprised at how much better she was with a Sig 226 than with a small-frame 38 revolver. The Sig required a few extra minutes of operational instruction of course, but it wasn't like it required years of study or anything.

Edit: You might consider categorizing them by caliber (or weight and caliber), as I find managing recoil to be the biggest problem for most people. Like I said, actually operating the Sig vs the revolver didn't require but a few extra minutes of instruction. You don't need to go to boot camp or anything, heh. My wife picked it up in like 5 minutes.

Thanks guys. I decided to go with the feats in d20 Modern since Aberrant d20 is modeled after that book. I have to spread xp before I can give you guys any more.

Magazine fed weapons are actually slightly easier to use (but slightly harder to service) than revolvers for a novice.

I would go with D20 moderns use of Personal Firearms Proficiency feat granting proficiency with almost all guns.

That or have a Handgun and a Rifle proficiency.
