I'm converting a race of my own creation from short stories and such written in my childhood, and one of the flavor things about this race is they often use a spiked chain.

So I'm looking for opinions how about these stats.

U'gul
+2 Dex -2 Wis
Lowlight vision
Free Profeicentcy in Spiked Chain
+2 racial bonus to Listen, Jump, and Move Silently
Favored Class: Fighter

I must make this consideration:

for a Dwarf is more "exotic" a (dwarven) waraxe (or a un Ugrosh) or a composite long bow or even a rapier?

for an (Half)Orc is more "exotic" a (Orc) Double Axe or a shortsword or a punchin dagger?

With those question, i just want to say that the label "exotic" is somewhat deviating. In terms of cultures for each race at least there should be different availability of weapons and armors, and of course different mentors able to teach how to use them.
It's completely obvious to say that a HUMAN with an Orc double axe is exotic, and more obvious for a sea-elf.... but an equipment (and availability in terms of proficencies) cannot be made on a standard of a single race.

So if your race is storically and culturally tied with spiked chains there will be no problem at all givin them as free proficency...

There's a need of building this kind of tables anyway. I am thinking on them since weeks now, but i still hadn't considered a priority; perhaps now, if anyone wants to help me, the time is come...

Elves geta few martial weapons, so granting one exotic weapon isn't that big of deal.

I agree that it's no big deal, but I will disagree with your reasoning. Several classes give all the martial weapon proficiencies - none give an exotic. You're better off comparing it to a race that would grant a free feat.

Rogues get Hand Crossbow. Monks get Kama, Nunchaku, Siangham, and Shuriken. So, classes do in fact give Exotic Weapon Proficiencies. :)

Yeah, but they all suck. The 'exotic' weapons you mentioned are no better than simple weapons.

Geoff.

Hmmm

I agree with the previous posters that ti should be allowed.

And I also Agree that +2 dex doesn't equal -2 Wis, it may equal
-2 con or -2 Str. But it may equal -2 Wis and -2 Int or Cha.

This was in the dmg I beleive.

The point was never how stong the wepaons are, just that the poster was mistaken that some classes allow for exotic weapons. And the exotic weapons are better then simple weapons. Each has a limited specific use to the class that grants the use of the weapon.

Yeah, that was a whoops :).

Point still stands though - it takes a feat to get exotic weapon proficiency normally. Better to compare it to free feats. Martial weapon proficiencies are easy to get.
