Would you find this rude?

Hello All,
I need to get some opinions on a dilema I have. Let me give you some background. The group I'm currently in is about to stop another DM's adventure midway through due to the group not enjoying the current game. This has never happened before. It is not a sure thing that we are going to stop but it looks like it will happen. I'm the next DM.
Here's the question. I want to send an email out to the group to get some prep done for my game. I plan on putting in the email that this is for whenever we finish the currrent game, whenever that my be. I talked to two people in the group and they say it would be bad to send out the email before we have ended the current game. I don't see where it would be that bad to do. It's not like I'm saying that we have to quit the current game and start mine. I just want to get some of the prep work done. I want to find out what people will be playing, give some background, etc.
What do others think? Should I wait? Would you as the current DM be offended? Thanks for your comments.

Have they told the other DM they are stopping his game? This is the part I'd be more concenred with becasue if the group intends to just tell him at the next session that they are basically quiting his game, what makes you think this won't happen to you?

It's only rude if the other guy is not currently aware he's being replaced. Otherwise, we do this all the time; the current GM will say 'I think I'll be done in a month or two' and then we all start planning the next game or campaign.

Maybe talk with the other DM and work out an exact date on when the last session in his game will be and when your new game will start. Then wait until the last possible moment to start emailing people. If you start emailing before he's finished his game, his last few games will go worse than they were before. Everyone will be anxious to play your game, so no one will give his game any attention at all. That could be very frustrating to the DM because I'm sure he's put his time into his game for you guys to play even if no one finds it fun.

I'd say no its not, with the caveat that you should at least wait until it is decided for sure that the current game will end. You don't have to wait for it to actually end, but if the plan is already in place, then gearing up for the next game only seems smart.

I'd wait until the other DM knows he's getting the door-hit-you-in-the treatment before you send out emails planning the next campaign.

Once he knows, and you've all talked to him and the situation is out in the open, then send the email.

Otherwise it IS rude ... how would you like to find out you're getting replaced when your replacement shows up and starts redecorating your office?

I'd say end the other game first and get that all cleared up. Has this been discussed with the other DM?

I've been in a situation like this. We were playing in Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and felt that the perpetual dungeon slog was just too repetitive and it felt like we were lost and didn't know what was going on. So I was the one to broach to the DM that we'd like to quit the adventure; it was the scenario not the DM (though the fact that he liked to beef up already tough encounters was sometimes hard to handle).

Then I was running a Star Wars game, and had a lot of insecurity regarding player enjoyment; we were all new to the system, I hadn't DMed in a while, and some of the players weren't that hot on a non-fantasy campaign. Eventually I decided to end it and switch to Arcana Evolved, as I found running SW too difficult (because of the disparity in class abilities, the already-established universe/story, and lots of other factors).

I hope any of my players would be candid with me if they didn't like the game, or the way I run a game. And if they want to end my game to start another, I'd hope to at least run a "wrap up" session, and then hopefully join in as a player in the new game.

The current DM does know that the group is thinking about stopping his game. But, I think after all the replies that I may wait. The olny reason I was going to get a jump on things was because it looks like we may stop this Saturday and I was hoping to get started. I think know that I will wait and see what happens this weekend. I can wait a week to start.
