Would you find this rude?

It's only rude if the other guy is not currently aware he's being replaced. Otherwise, we do this all the time; the current GM will say 'I think I'll be done in a month or two' and then we all start planning the next game or campaign.

Same here. I would check with the current DM though just to make sure he's ok with it.

the group could stand to play a card game or board game for a week while you prepare. :)
I recommend RoboRally.

With beer.

Hilarity ensues (sense of humor not included).

Warrior Poet

Edit: I'd recommend waiting the week as per the suggestion of Elizabeth I's father just up-thread.

I'd say you might as well send it, as long as you send one to the current DM and make sure you mention to everyone that this is only in preparation for whenever your turn comes up. If you're working on your own campaign, it should take more than a week to prepare for things and I know that it helps to know what the others are being so you know how to begin. Heck, the people in my group have known that I'm working on a campaign and have already made characters for it, though we won't be starting for a while.

However, it all depends on the people. My group would understand, but I don't know about your group. It all depends on what you feel. If two members of your group believe it would be rude, it sounds like you should wait. You can always start preparing a little now anyway.

While we do this too, I'd still say wait. At least with my group, we get so excited about the upcoming new campaign that we can't concentrate on the existing one.

Hello All,
I need to get some opinions on a dilema I have. Let me give you some background. The group I'm currently in is about to stop another DM's adventure midway through due to the group not enjoying the current game. This has never happened before. It is not a sure thing that we are going to stop but it looks like it will happen. I'm the next DM.

Just one question and I haven't read the entire thread so if it's been asked forgive me. What happens if you put tons of time and effort into a campaign and they decide to stop it midway because no one is having fun? How would you feel about that?

What do others think? Should I wait? Would you as the current DM be offended? Thanks for your comments.

Tough to say. It depends on the people in your group and how they are used to relating to each other. In my group, we frequently talk aout thenext campaign, and the one after that, so its fairly normal for us to do as you are suggesting.

On the other hand, if you think the others in your group would react negatively about it, then you shouldn't do it. And really, if you are not sure, and are asking us, its probably not something you should do. It won't hurt anything to wait a few weeks yet, will it?

That depends on whether I accepted that my campaign was going to end, whether I was still trying to resuscitate it, or whether I had no idea that anyone was dissatisfied. If the first thing I heard about anyone's dissatisfaction was that everyone had snuck around without telling me and set up another campaign I'd be a mite miffed, yes.

Speaking for myself and not Beldar, I'd feel that I had not done well enough.

It happens every now and again. I experiement a lot with different games, settings, periods, themes, tones, and campaign premises. Some of the things I try just don't work, or at least don't catch the character-players' fancy at the time. They naturally die.

But when they do, I like people to be up front about it.

I'd say wait. The key here is foreknowledge: you know the group is going to end that campaign, so it will look as if you were planning to "steal them away" if you send it out now. Out of courtesy (and to save your own hide ;) ), you should wait and simply propose a new game when the current one ends.
