Wounding effects

Boss

First Post
I was sitting around the house yesterday watching Gladiator when I realized that there isn't a good system for wounds that become infected without treatment. Now I realize that in DnD, a cleric can just cast a Cure spell and all is well, but what if there isn't a cleric available, or no one with the Heal skill is around. Currently, our party (which I am a member of) decides to find a place to rest comfortably and regain their hit points. The cleric heals some of the party, but I know that on more than one occassion, my monk has not gotten healed by spell or skill, and awoken the next day refreshed, having only said he was binding his wound with cloth (he has no healing skill... though I intend to start rectifying this after my realization yesterday).

Has anyone come up with a good system to reflect the non-caring of wounds?

omrob, who sometimes posts here but is currently vacationing in Iceland, has used infected wounds on us before in his campaign. I'm not entirely certain how his system worked- it seemed similar to the disease rules iirc.
