WOW - d20 Modern BoVD - New Covers - What do you think?

Yes indeedy, as soon as I saw the BoVD cover I figured it wasn't going to be the final cover. I think sometimes (all the time) people "wig-out" a bit too early about some things. :)
The bat wings and engraved metal design should look pretty cool when it's done.

The Spider Queen cover is nice, just like the other FR stuff. Those are some damn good looking books. I wish the pages of all of RP books felt the same as the ones in those products do. Heh.

As for the modern book, if they'd give me the book right now, they could cover it with a friggin' paper bag. :) I want it in a bad way. I like the second cover, with the more emphasized metal theme, better than the first one.
If the final book came with a real brushed metal cover with the picture painted on, I'd soil myself, get cleaned up, and then go out and buy it, though not necessarily in that order. But hey, I'll settle for a regular cover, it saves me the cleanup phase.

Well, the artist's signature on the D&D Modern is "Johnson." I definitely recognize the signature as being the work of a comic book illustrator. I don't remember his first name, or what company he worked for, though I think it might have been Image.

It's Dave Johnson and currently all he pretty much does are covers. Currently, he is the cover artist on the Vertigo comic 100 Bullets.

The cover certainly looks like a comp along with the Book of Vile Darkness.

Modern: I like the second cover better, but I wish they had kept the punk chick.
Agreed!

BoVD: Doesn't impress me much but - like The Traveler said - it's probably not the final one anyway.

And the Spider Queen cover is awesome! :)

Mark--The Villain Design Handbook cover is great (I really like that artist's work), except that the villain looks dorky, with a more"Ow! I stubbed my toe!" than an "I want to murder your entire family in cold blood and rule the world" expression on his face. For godsakes, get the artist to change that guy before you publish!

Sorry, Kap, I have to disagree. Of course, I already knew we have completely different tastes in art (cough Geanavue cough). :) Also, you're only looking at a fuzzy jpeg. It'll look much better when printed in its high-res glory.

BoVD is not as... "real" as I was expecting.

From what I understand, the original 3 core books WERE real. They were actual, tangible art pieces, real book covers, that were put together (by someone clever whom I envy!), then hi-res photographed for the covers.

By comparison this one looks like a photoshop treatment that just copies the "style" of the original three.
