WOW Expansion Alliance race announced.

To be honest, I really hate the race's looks and I especially hate the lore behind it, to me it really seems like a desperate attempt to do something that would surprise us

The main reason that I hate is actually that every 12-year old is now going to play a draenei paladin, increasing the 'kiddy'-ness of the alliance to an even higher level

Metzen actually has notebooks upon notebooks of lore that never is likely to see the day. I don't find this to be out of character at all for the storyline, given that this was started 10 years ago, when their tastes weren't as mature as they are now.

And every 12 year old already has their undead rogue and night elf hunter characters. Given that paladins' primary ability in WoW is to not die in PVP without an insane amount of effort, I don't think that really appeals to the kiddies. Kiddies like DPS classes. Lord knows I do. :p

Well, I based my post on the fact that a friend of mine (he's 16, but he acts like a 12-year old in social situations, he's too spoiled) reacted, when he first saw the race, I wanna play a draenei paladin, and when I replied: 'the lore doesn't really make sense and the alliance are going to overpower the horde in numbers' he was like: I still wanna play

and yes, he currently plays a DPS-geared pala ;)

PS: does anyone else but me think that the Blood elf racial abilities are underpowered for mana-classes and overpowered for rogues and warriors? warriors especially

As a long-time fan of the Warcraft setting, I'm very impressed with the Draenai; they're original, and they definately shed some interesting new insights into Warcraft lore.

Too bad the Horde is stuck with just another elf subrace and don't get a cool new original race. :(

Given the number of people who bemoaned the ability to not play a high elf in the basic game, I think blood elves are likely to become the most popular race in the game for the first six months after the expansion. And the Horde may well pull even on a lot of servers, population-wise. (The 3:1 and worse ratios have been discredited by Blizzard when they screen out low level mule characters. The worst is apparently somewhere around 1.5:1 ratio, which still isn't great, but isn't the end of the world.)

Wouldn't surprise me. The "pretty" races (usually humans and elves) are always the most popular in MMORPGs.

Here is my problem with the Eredar:
Over time, demonic entities made their way into the Titans' worlds from the Twisting Nether, and the Pantheon elected its greatest warrior, Sargeras, to act as its first line of defense. A noble giant of molten bronze, Sargeras carried out his duties for countless millennia, seeking out and destroying these demons wherever he could find them. Over the eons, Sargeras encountered two powerful demonic races, both of which were bent on gaining power and dominance over the physical universe.

The eredar, an insidious race of devilish sorcerers, used their warlock magics to invade and enslave a number of worlds. The indigenous races of those worlds were mutated by the eredar's malevolent powers and turned into demons themselves. Though Sargeras' nearly limitless powers were more than enough to defeat the vile eredar, he was greatly troubled by the creatures' corruption and all-consuming evil. Incapable of fathoming such depravity, the great Titan began to slip into a brooding depression. Despite his growing unease, Sargeras rid the universe of the warlocks by trapping them within a corner of the Twisting Nether.

And then the retcon:
Unfortunately the eredar's accomplishments caught the attention of Sargeras, the Destroyer of Worlds. He had already begun his Burning Crusade to eradicate all life from the cosmos, and he believed that the brilliant eredar would be pivotal in leading the vast demonic army he was gathering. Thus, he contacted the eredar's three most prominent leaders: Kil'jaeden, Archimonde, and Velen. In exchange for the loyalty of the eredar race, Sargeras offered untold power and knowledge.

Which can be found here.

So which is it? Did Sargeras corrupt the Eredar or did the Eredar's evil cause him to fall? Certainly this is contradictory information, perhaps even intentionally contradictory, but it does seem a little sloppy of Blizzard.

I'd say that the retcon is now official canon. However, Blizzard should probably go back and edit the previously existing storyline to match the new backstory of the Eredar.
