Writer/librarian seeking work in Atlanta area.

Last year in the fall I posted a thread asking for helping finding a job. I found a job, but it's one of those crappy "I'm only doing this until I can find something better" jobs -- I'm a grocery store cashier, getting $8 an hour.

I'm asking for help again, this time to find me something I can do for the long run without feeling like I wasted tens of thousands of dollars on a college degree. Between the grocery store (Publix) and E.N. Publishing, I can afford to pay the bills, and my life is good because of friends, a girlfriend, and writing. Heck, even Publix isn't a bad place to work. It's just not what I want to do.

So I'd like the folks here to help me out if they can. I live in Decatur, one of the cities inside of the Metro Atlanta area, and I'm looking for some sort of writing or publishing job, a library job, or a clerical position. I'm planning next fall to enroll in a distance learning Master of Library Science program, but I can't afford it on my current salary. (By the way, if you know of good distance learning library programs, I'd like to hear about those too.)

I definitely need something that pays more than $10 an hour, preferably more like $12 or $14. I can get anywhere in the Atlanta area, but I don't want to move because the reason I can stand to work at Publix now is because I love my friends so much. I don't want to leave them, and I'm sure there's gotta be jobs here in Atlanta for me.

So far I've applied a lot at Emory University (where I graduated), and then a smattering of public libraries in the area. If anyone has connections, I would be deeply gratified for your help. And if anyone else in Atlanta is looking for a job, let me know and I'll see if I can help you.

My general resume is attached.

That reminds me, Diaglo. A few CDC folks have come by Publix and told me the CDC could use some editors for their publications. But I don't see any such jobs listed on the site. Might they be managed from another office? Could you ask for me where I could find out information about editing or other publication work for you guys?

there are a lot of subcontracting jobs. the list i think i posted was for full time positions but i could be wrong.

contracting is the wave of the future here.

edit: i'll see what i can find out for you. but being in the lab doesn't help much. the dark side... editing side.. is not close by.

Contracting seems to be the wave of the future everywhere. Most places seem to use one or a very few companies exclusively so its best to see if you can find out which ones places you want to work at are using. Then you can go to them and try to convince them to place you. Note that they'll happily take your resume and file it but that isn't necessarily going to get you a job (though I've had it work out in the past). I've had the most success checking job listings for that company to see what positions they're trying to fill and then trying to sell the recruiter on myself as the perfect fit.

That's my experience working as an IT contractor off an on for several years. I don't know how other fields will differ but anything white collar seems to be fairly similar from my limited experience outside of IT.

Now darn it! When I posted a thread like this a little more than a year ago, the mods shut it down and deleted it, stating that it was inappropriate!

RW, I wish you the best of luck (and the offer to forward your resume to my company stands) but the double standard is a bit frustrating!

I hope there's not really a double standard. I'm sorry, Universe, if the mods gave you trouble.

Today I got an offer to work a 5-day convention stint at the Georgia Dome, on account of my passable Japanese. I hope I actually speak well enough to pull off what they want, but they're paying $12 an hour, so I'm pulling out my textbooks and refreshing myself.

It's not full time work by a long shot, but it should be fun.

Hey - no big deal. I wish you the best!

As always, let me know if there's anything I can do. :D
