Different Types of Attorneys Will Be Bad in Completely Different Ways

I did some alignment switching in my earlier career.

As a public defender I was a state criminal defense litigator.

Except when I was working on a class action lawsuit for indigent defendants jailed for not paying their fines when I was a federal civil plaintiff litigator.

Later I became a legal analyst and was a mostly federal civil litigation but neutral on the plaintiff defense axis.

Thankfully it was not 1e rules and did not cost me a level every time my work shifted. :)

Are Latin (Res Ipsa Loquitor, Per Curiam) and French (Voir Dire) extra alignment languages?
Que? Was sagen sie?

Nah, they’re like our alignment weapons, holdovers from an earlier time. And like them, our familiarity is piecemeal, incomplete, and often not quite right.

I still remember my horror on Day 3 of the Texas Bar Exam where I absolutely froze and couldn’t remember the term “habeas corpus”. My desperate internal monologue was going “It’s Latin for ‘have the body’! It’s Latin for ‘have the body’! It’s part of the name of that coastal town in Texas! It’s part of the name of that coastal town in Texas!”

FYI, new post in the semi-coherent series (?) up.

I just need to file that Corpus Christi petition before the deadline.

As well as alignment knives, swords, maces, flails and so forth, a holdover from when we had to be prepared for trial by combat.
