Writers & Artists Needed!

Writers and artists are needed for articles for the upcoming EN5IDER and TRAILSEEKER publications, a pair of online roleplaying game magazines. All work is paid freelance work. If you can write a 2,000 word article or a 5,000 word short adventure, check out the submissions page and contact one of the editors. If you're an artist, the art director is also waiting to hear from you! Each 'magazine' will initially produce one article per week, including one adventure per month and one system-neutral article per month.

The publications themselves won't be launching for a while. The initial focus will be on commissioning an advance stock of high quality completed articles. Click here for the submissions page!

$0.03 is "typical" but some might be free or paid more and, yeah, you're right, nothing specified about art. Probably it's variable as well according to who you are, size of the art and color/B&W. I just wish there were more solid information. I guess there's no real risk involved in working something up for submission...

My primary concern at this point would be pay. I'm one of a team of 3; myself (creative writer/visual artist) and 2 others (more structured, technical writers with a head for putting adventures together). Now I understand that there's an exclusivity clause in there, implicitly accepted if you submit, but with that must come some decent degree of compensation. "Paid freelance work" doesn't shed much light and the fact that there won't be royalties on the back end is a bit of a red flag in my opinion.
So, on acceptance, in exchange for taking and gaining one year's worth of worldwide exclusivity, exactly what will our one-time payment be?

The starting rate is on the page - it's $0.03 per word. The editors are very communicative about this stuff. There's no secrecy involved; we're very big on transparency. The only reason the full contract isn't there for you to download right now is simply because it's brand new.

And for art? How about if a team of 3 send you an adventure complete with artwork? Or is that more a private negotiating thing? If so just tell me and I'll shut up and email you guys. :)

We won't accept free stuff, so it's all paid. For art, right now we're kinda doing it case-by-case, but it'll settle down into some standard rates soon. We'll make them public once we've done that.

We can't take unsolicited manuscripts or art (so as to protect ourselves in case of simultaneous but independent development of similar work), so you'd need to talk to the editor about that. The process is a short proposal, followed by a contract, followed by the work. We try to make it as easy as possible, and we can probably work around different situations easily enough.

The number of people involved makes no difference on our end, as long as you're willing to share the fee!

Morrus, I think this question got buried in the thread:

So, would we be notified if a proposal was not accepted?

It would be nice not to be stuck in limbo instead of pursuing other options for publication of the proposed piece.
