X-COM 2

Morrus

Well, that was fun

Anybody playing it? Just downloaded it yesterday. It feels a little tougher from the start than the previous one. Also interesting just how much the combat system influenced my WOIN combat system.

I've been playing it starting last night. It feels new in some ways, the interface is generally tighter and more informative, but in others it's comfortably familiar. The unexpected misses - and hits - keep the combat exciting, snipers are still awesome, and I still seem to never have quite as many engineers or supplies as I need.

And yeah, it definitely feels challenging right from the start.

Played it? I love it and plan to put a ring on it.

I can't praise this game enough. I have to repeat what was written on various review sites. XCOM2 takes all the good from XCOM:EU and the Long War mod and doubles down on them. Everything just jells together seamlessly.

It does feel more difficult and unforgiving, even more so than Long War. I failed my first playthrough. I didn't realize how important it was to make contacts.

I thought at first, I wouldn't like the timer on most missions but it wasn't as bad as I feared. It makes sense that you wouldn't have a lot of time because you're basically on the run the entire campaign.
The character pool is a nice addition. My friends saved their characters and one of them showed up as a Dark VIP. He didn't make it to the extraction point. Sad, that.

There are a few bugs. The sound is muffled sometimes or the music stops playing. The camera also occasionally goes to where the action isn't. And an enemy got levitated a few feet and stabbed in the crotch instead of the head with a Skulljack. I don't know how much information is stored in the nards but it was fun to see.
But those bugs are minor and I'm sure they'll be solved soon.

My main criticism with the game (I don't remember if I felt this in XCOM 1) is that the enemy activity turns sometimes take ages. I sit there looking at my watch, going for a walk, making dinner, taking a quick weekend break, waiting for when it's my turn to do something again. OK, I exaggerate, but is there a way to speed those up?

No, I mean the time it takes to go through the alien turns. There's lots of waiting in between their actions. I don't know if that's a setting or something. It's like:

Alien 1 moves
Pause
Alien 1 fires
Pause
Pause
Alien 2 moves
Pause
Alien 2 fires
Pause

Takes ages. Maybe it's my computer?

I think it might be the computer. A friend of mine has a pretty good computer and it runs nice and smooth on there. It's an absolute memory hog, the game.
