How much XP do you take away for casting and creating magic items? I think the wizards get robbed when they have to spend XP to create magic items and casting certain spells. Not many other characters lose the XP... should they lose it too? Or should XP costs be banned?

Haha- I am introducing a flood more xp cost situations into my campeigns. From the disciplines in the Path of * books to pc created magic items, the players will have lots of options.

That was the only problem with the xp sink, imo, it was only aimed at casters - especially wizards. There should have been similar options for melee characters (fighting schools/styles).

Of course- casters actually got some decent higher level feats. So, I guess it is a bit fair. heh.

I *love* the idea of XP costs, and in fact think they're much too small for the benefit involved.

Some short-term loss (ie. XP) for *permanent* effects/items?? Yeah, okay. Duh.

I like XP costs - the more of them, the merrier. I present my players with as many XP cost options as I can get my hands on usually - for one thing it slows their progression ever so slightly and I can control their advancement a little better and for another, it allows them to customize their characters even more (esp. with Prestige Races and the like in the mix).

Hey, who am I to argue with my players if thats how they want to use their XP?

Heck yeah. XP costs are brilliant. It has a large moderating effect on my resident level 16 Wizard, otherwise we would have boatloads of magic items in my game group (Im the DM if you had'nt already guessed :P )

On eof the best things about 3E is the use of XP costs for magic items and spells. It seems a little painful at the time but you are getting (in the case of magic items) a permanent boost to your character and/or party. The spells that cost XP are usually very powerful and worth the relatively small XP hit.

If anything for many magic items the XP and gold cost is way too low (Boots of Speed for example). I house rule some of them but try to go by what the DMG states.

This will be the one thing I am most interested about 3.5E. Changes to the XP cost for magic items. Hopefully they will go into more depth on it.

Once again...

none of the above.

I use the listed costs, but allow power components. See the power component rules in the DMG.

Mystic Eye Games' Artificer's Handbook, due out in April, has rules for magic item creation that don't rely on XP cost.

Personally, I can't stand the concept of XP cost for creating magic item.
"So, let me get this straight, I just went up a level, and now I can no longer make something I could make yesterday because I don't have any extra XP"

What??!
