XP: DMG VS FRCS Method, plus Cohorts XP

Karginb, you have my vote. However how do you keep it from getting just and fair for all involved. I mean there are always favorite players and thus giving out XP will be biased...

I decided this past week (see my other thread: "Newbie here who needs help" or whatever the hell I called it) to ditch the challenge rating system all together. I'm dead set against it. Role-Players should be awarded experience for role-playing, not roll playing.

Role players (the players) don't gain experience, their characters do. Sure, I award xp for good role playing, but battling monsters and seeing how it is done helps a character learn better how to do it the next time.

I trie and balance things in my own way. I´ve extracted the algoritm behind the Xp-table and give every PC the apropriate XP for an encounter for his level, muliplied by (own level/total levels). In this way the encounter-xp is proportionate to the party-size but lower level PC´s get more XP then high levels (as it should be for a CR5 encounter will be more educating to a level 4 PC then to a level 6 PC)

On the other hand possible rewards for roleplaying go up with your level. So high-level characters can get as much XP as low-level characters, but they´ll have to roleplay harder for it. And if they roleplay really well, they´ll end up with more XP then low-level players.

I like this method because it motivates the more experienced players (usually the higher level ones) to invoolve themselves in the game and be an example and stimulance to the newer players. It also gives the new players a chance to ´catch up´.

I use the FR system (although I've never actually read it) and 1/2 XP for cohorts. If you don't give cohorts 1/2 XP with this system, they'll soon catch up to the character in level and leave him.

I -never- give XP for "roleplaying". That's only usefull for punishing players the DM doesn't like.

...and for encouraging roleplaying. The system I use (posted above) has gotten new players who would otherwise sit in the corner and only speak when spoken to to interact, talk to npcs, etc. And sometimes, it's gotten outspoken players with quiet, sit in the corner characters to be quiet, too.
:D

I use the DMG method, and I award XP solely for overcoming challenges. This means that I use the CR system, and I believe that it works very well indeed.
