Yamaha Receiver Problems... Any Help?

So my receiver starts shutting itself down and giving me the message, "Check SP Wire." Anyone have any clue on that? Is that speaker wire? It's a 5.1 system, but right now, it's just a 5.0 system as my base is dead (and unplugged.)

My first guess would be that you are getting a short across the speaker wire. Really hard to say without more info though unfortunately.

Yes that is the error message for short circuit of the speaker wires. Try checking both at the speaker and reciever end to see if ther is any short circuit. You could also check what the setting of the Impedance selector on the backside of the reciever is, if there is one the impedance chosen should match that of the speaker.

Stupid question...

How do I check for a short in a speaker wire? Take them out one at a time and see if that resolves the problem?

While you are blasting your favorite tune, put your tongue on the exposed connectors. :p

Ok seriously, don't do that.

Pretty much. How old/new is your speaker wire? What gauge? Do you use banana connectors or just the frayed wire at the ends? I highly recommend banana connectors to anyone with any sort of hi-fi receiver.
