"Yeah, Goliaths. We spent all night coming up with that one."

I rather like the name.
Knew you would.

It's simple and easy to pronounce, and that's a huge benefit. :)
Not for you the R'r An Thkal Piyunaajgh then?

MerricB said:
It also has the connotation of a large humanoid figure, so that also helps!
Yes, a large humanoid in particular... I know where you're coming from (Austria, according to Hong) but I don't think that connotation does help. But then you knew that already and I asked for opinions and, er -

Good idea. Cheers!

PS Mystaros, thanks for the link. Goliaths are not actually made of stone. They're between humans and giants with a correspondingly interesting and distinguishing mechanic called Powerful Build. It lets them use the Large creature modifier where it would be advantageous for them to do so while their space and reach remain Medium.

Not really, no. Not if I don't want my players to laugh at me.

(Was playing a RPGA module the other day, and the names of the characters were laughable. I know that because the players couldn't stop laughing. Nor could I. :))

Yes, like "Do you have an issue with goliath as a racial name?"

Nope. Not really. :D One reason may be that I haven't grown up steeped in old testament tradition, so Goliath has only minor connotations. I know "David and Goliath" less well than I do, say, "Thor's visit to the Giants".

Naming things is problematic. You can go for a nonsense sound, or for something that has a meaning. If you go for a meaning, you get the problems with people who understand what it's for. Although Goliath doesn't bother me, the use of Balor as the name of a Type VI demon irritates me greatly.

Cheers!

I actually like the name, but how about these alternatives: hulks, heavies, monum (from monumental), garga (from gargantuan) or immen (from immense)?

What I like about goliath is that it's simple and fairly evocative, so I tried to stick with that while thumbing through my thesaurus for ideas. ;) Of the ones I mentioned, I particularly like garga.

Hope this helps. :)

Yep and I don't want my players laughing at me either. I'm no fan of Names No Human Tongue Can Say - that's what I was making fun of in my silly remark. But my players would imagine that I'd invented the goliaths, if I brought them into the game and, if I said that they called themselves goliaths, the players would think I hadn't put much effort into naming them.

Gnome is a real word for something that doesn't exist (if you ignore the alternative meaning of maxim or aphorism, which most people wouldn't know anyway). What I want is a nonsense sound that sounds like a real word for something that could have come from a legend or myth but not a real name.

Anyway, I'm glad it works for you, as is. And I share your disdain for the name Balor.

Edit: Typos creeping in. Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions. I'll check back on this when I've had eight hours of uninterrupted rest.

I like Hruka, personally. It's evocative of an alien race of beings. If I used goliaths, I'd call them something else, like Hruka.
