Yi Gi Oh....addictive for adults?

Well, it's actually one of the smarter shows around (and the CCG is much more original than others - anyone watch Duel Masters, in which there are five colours of mana ('light, dark, fire, water, and nature')?), as you can watch the plays and go 'oh yeah, that'd work'. Sure, the players are overly macho and their plays aren't anything a reasonably well-informed CCG geek wouldn't spot immediately, but I don't like to miss a show.

Also, despite toning down the sexuality element for dubbed release, certain characters are still easy on the eyes.

I think it's much better than bad, better than average even, and I can see how someone might find it tense, especially if they're in a particular mental place - is your friend into CCGs or anything? Have they had experience with other anime? I've known people in University who had similar experiences with South Park, although their reaction wasn't tense fixation, but running away.

Anyway, I can sorta see how someone would tense up. People can sometimes be odd, and that's what this is - odd. Not impossible, or entirely unjustified. Just something other people shouldn't worry about.

Well, in the author's defense, the card game focus wasn't the premise of the original manga. Yugi/Yami played a bunch of games, until the guy's editors told him to play up the card game aspect.

Huh. Yu-gi-oh is just about the most boring, and one of the ugliest anime shows no TV these days. Even my 8-yo son, who really likes the card game, can't motivate himself to watch an entire episode. And [/i]I'm[/i] more entertained by the Pokemon show.

Not to say that I'm entertained by the Pokemon show...

I rather enjoy it when I get to watch. Some of the Egyptian symbolism is entertaining, and I love the overall 'secret' to the plot. It certainly does get ridiculous at times, but certain parts of the story are good enough I can ignore the rest.

And, yes, the card game came after the manga. So, it's hard to call the show advertising, at least for the first season or so. The game came later, but was already well-established by the time the anime made it to the States. I suppose you could say, the Japanese version was a work of its own, while the American version was advertising. :D

Well, my (12yo) son enjoys watching the show, but has basically given away his cards to his friends. Some of it is simply a giving spirit/pleaser attitude he has, some of it was that some of his best cards were lost/stolen, and some of it seems to be that he doesn't craze over getting the special/rare/valuable cards like the companies might hope he would. The times I saw him give away a WOWZA-type card for 3-5 really mediocre or downright bad cards, and his "friends" would really take advantage. I figured eventually he would catch on and "learn his lesson", but he never seemed to wake up on the quality/diversity over quantity/repetition factor. Did the same thing with Pokemon. *shrugs*

My daughter used to enjoy playing the game with him, but as she is now 15 (!) she has turned to more "normal" teenager-girl things (the horror!)

There have been plenty of times that I'll be reading something in the same room while my son's watching. I can't help but roll my eyes at the incredible number of times that the scenario comes up where "I must pull this ONE card out of my deck now or the whole match is lost" and lo and behold what do they draw!?!?! Amazing!!! Or the frequent statements that seem to go "oh, but have you forgotten about the extra special ability that kicks with MY card simply because you are using THOSE (type of) cards"?

Well, let me bring in the wife to give her credit. She has taken an interest in it primarily to keep the line of communications open with our son. Me and him, we've got computer games, beginning RPG interest, and fantasy novels to connect on.

But SHAKES over the series? Wow.

Update: Well, after seeing the film, and hearing the crowd responding to certain theme of punch lines in the movie.

It is for kids, but blast, there is a hidden adult message in there too.

I will admit, at one point, I had to explain a scene to a friend, who is advid watcher of the cartoon, (not the one with the shakes), I broke down the mechanics on what was done in that scene and blast it!!!! I don't even watch the cartoon at all, and here I am explaining a card move done in the movie, to a more experience watcher of this stuff.

Go figure:o .

And yes, I did find myself cheering along at some points...I did go there, with an open mind, and no...I will not be getting the cards or watching the series.

Iron Will (that a feat:D )

I play the card game with my cousins, and I think it's fun. The show's ok too. I took my cousins to see the movie, and while the movie was entertaining, I got screwed over with the card I got. My cousins got Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, Sorcerer of Dark Magic, and Pyramid of Light. I got Watapon. :p
