You ever argue XP with a DM?

Here's a different question, have you ever argued/questioned/inquired on how much XP you got for a session becasue you felt the amount was wrong?

With the CR system it is easy for anyone to look up how much XP monsters are worth for the levels of the PCs and do the math. I know some DMs to alter the XP they award and sometimes they don't inform the players of it before hand. So, I can see the situation coming up in games.

Never, and I don't think most dms I've played under do xp by the book anyhow- I certainly don't.

Nor would I appreciate a player arguing xp with me as dm.

Yeah. If the fight was truly difficult, and we get some ridiculously low amount, I'll mention it. Absolutely.

Important to note, I won't *fight* over it, but I'll certainly mention it.

Nope. Not recently, and not in decades of gaming, either. I've never felt the need to argue the point. I've never felt slighted or cheated. I've never even felt the need tocheck and see if I was given the "right" amount.

Sure, there's a standard set of rules for XP, but I don't feel a need to have the DM stick to them. Giving me the wrong number of XP isn't like screwing up reach in a fight, or giving an opponent too man AoO, or soemthing otherwise deadly or plot-relevant. My character will move along if I'm given more than, less than, or the exact amount the rules dictate.

Now, if I felt the DM were giving me more or lessss than other PCs without good cause, then I might have an issue. But if the GM is being even-handed, I have no reason to quibble.

I don't give XP by the book, or by encounter. I base it entirely on story awards, role-playing, and a general sense of roughly how fast I want the campaign to advance. About half the games I've ever played in used the same technique.

So no, unless I felt one person was being specifically mistreated as compared to the others, I wouldn't fight with a DM over XP. And when I'm DMing, I'd happily show the door to anyone who tried to fight with me about it.

Only once, it was a long standing Werewolf game, where he threw nasty encounters at us, with only an experience point every other session (recommended is 2-4 XP per session). We talked to him about it, but he never did anything about it, so then one week none of us bothered showing up for the game. Campaign over.

If a player wants to talk with me about XP awards, that's fine. I use the book as a baseline but definitely alter things depending on the situation.

But argue? If a player argues with me about XP, they're more likely to get even less.

I've certainly asked XP questions before, but not to start an argument. Never that. Most of my questions are for curiosity's sake; not because I feel slighted.

I've 'argued' only if it seemed really inaccurate. Many GMs I know don't use the XP system as it currently stands, instead relying on the 'feel' of what they're trying to accomplish. When I was running Slavelords for example, I just looked at what level the characters should be and put 'em at that amount. No XP needed.

Another one of my friends is running a Conan game and it looks like he's following my lead and doing 1 level every two-three sessions.

Others may vary.
