Darn right! It was too busy KICKING BUTT to worry about petty things like balance! :D

I've said it before, but this edition does in some fundamental ways remind me of 1st edition; it's like the designers took another look at some old tropes and re-instituted them.

You know, I've made some similar comments to some friends of mine, but in my case, the example I used was BECMI, not 1E.

Overall, though, I think we're both talking about the same thing, in terms of the game--in some respects, and I mean this in an entirely positive fashion--getting back to basics.

Funnily enough, I've had a bug for "back to basics" gaming for a few weeks now, and I've been working on a campaign to that effect. I had been planning on running it with Castles & Crusades, but after seeing the 4E stuff that's come out of the XP, I'm running this puppy as a 4E game, no questions. Ironically, the planned structure of the campaign already slots perfectly into the three tiers. :)

Yeah, when having talks with my oldest friend (we started playing D&D together when we were 6), we both agreed that we're getting an old school vibe off a lot of things. It seems like they went back over the old editions and said "What is most memorable about these games?" and then tried to rebuild those feelings with a new system.

Yeah one of my friends got into D&D well before I did, but he hasn't been keeping up with 4E.
So when I have been telling him about 4E he has remarked that there was, to quote "a familiarity with 4E".

Oh hey... I just peeked at the sample characters and the first thing that happened to me was flashback to BECMI and Mystara! :D I can't pin-point it but there's something in the format and straight forward presentation of the few mechanics that seems to be the trigger for that memory.

I kinda like that.

I guess I'll give 4E a second look!

I posted notification to my wonderful semi-nerd wife last night that Wizards of the Coast will be receiving a large portion of our disposable income over the next year. She feigned disdain, but I thought I saw a hint of relief in her eye.

Old school feel, modern rules...

I have feeling that Bill and Clark at Necromancer Games' are popping corks right about now!

Lucky guy

I'm extremely lucky that my wife loves D&D (maybe not as much as she does, but I don't get her Adrian Paul obsession either). We've been playing together since middle school (1980).

We've already budgeted for new 4e rules. But we always budget about $100.00 a month just for new game books. Like I said, I'm a lucky, lucky guy. Since she makes much more money than I do (teacher here!), I should say that she's spending 100.00 a month on gaming books. :heh:
